ok..
my dns is hosted by networking solutions..
I'm now (as soon as provisioning is finished) having my domains hosted @ SM..
do I really need to change the dns hosting to the planet or can I get away with just changing the dns server info @ networksolutions?

You can get away with keeping DNS at Netsol, IF you have access to your zone file, as you'd have to update that.

Not familiar with Netsol's services much. If you don't know what a zone file is, you'd better read up on DNS a bit and then you could use SM's DNS servers to start with, as they are more likely to be of assistance.

as it stands. all I have to do is log in...
choose the domain I want to edit, change the dns servers and done..
didn't know if there was anything more I had to do than point it to the new dns ip/name

Are you running your DNS server or using SM ? If you are using your own DNS with a control panel then just by setting up your site, all the entries would be included for you provided the DNS Server has been properly set up. If you are using SM's DNS servers then you just need the extra step of submitting a DNS ticket in Orbit for them to include it in their server. You need to provide domain name + IP address.

If I correctly understand, what you describe is making the servers authoritative for your domain(s). However, this does not change your zone file (which contains info on the IP your domain can be found at, as well as email, etc.).

I am not sure if I am talking about something you already know, or if you are completely new to DNS...

If you could indicate whether or not you know what an A, MX or SOA record is, that would give me an idea where you are at.

he he he..
you might as well have just asked if I was a newb or not..
i've changed the a record to the right ip, and i've changed the dns entry's themselves...just waiting for it to filter down, but I haven't done this yet..

I need to do this..
I wasn't sure if that's what that function in orbit was for or not..
I thought it might be an actual dns change request..
so i'll get that taken care of..thanks..
