Could anyone please tell what are some acceptable justifications to get the additional IP's available with a server rental.

SSL Website hosting. Each SSL website requires its own ip/port combo, and having them on the default port means each one requires a diff ip.

What do you need additional IPs for?

Maybe he's running 9+ Half-Life servers (or low usage equivalent) on a Dual Xeon.. That's the only reason that I can think of icon_razz.gif

Even THEN, you can run the game servers on different ports. Folks, IP's are a SCARCE commidity. PLEASE use em wisely.

i hate running them on different ports. Plus you can't rent out two servers on the same ip. It only adds mass confusion plus makes your buisness look cheap.

Don't you get 11 IP's with every Total Control purchase...? I really hope one wouldn't host more than 11 game servers on a machine.

No one runs them on different ports any more. Like the others say just makes you look cheap as a company and if someone is joining your server via ip they have to change the port number aswell otherwise they go to the server on the default port.

Yeah they do! And you can of course get more when you buy em! And each of the ServerMatrix boxes come with default of 5 i think it is.

As far as running it on diff ports making us look cheap.. I'd more think of it as being a good net citizen. Just like not running open email relay servers. icon_smile.gif

I think you need to specify why you need it. Using someone's elses reasons to get more IPs would not be ethnically correct.

I don't think IP's for a game server is justification. At least I wouldn't give someone IP's just to 'play' with literally.

If 11 IP's comes with a particular server and if thats enough, then you shouldn't have to worry about it, but if you went cheap and got a default 5 IP's, maybe consider leasing another server for another 5 IPs.

This is the same type of issue with Ventrilo, Teamspeak, etc. I have all of those servers on 1 IP because they can use different ports and don't need additional IP's unless they're run on different physical servers. If that makes me look cheap, then so be it because I don't believe in wasting something we don't have an unlimited supply of.

Extra IP's for game servers is not proper justification for geting extra IP's. IP's are scarce, so we only sell extras to those who can provide ARIN justification. The rule of thumb is if it needs it's own IP address to run (eg: multiple DNS servers or SSL certificates) then we'll sell you extras. Things like games, which you can run on a different port, or web sites, which you can run off a single IP.

Many GSP's seem to stick their private server offerings on non-standard ports...perhaps this explains that issue.

I know it is a death sentence for a public server to run on an "off" port in most situations.

Some of this may change once IPv6 starts picking up popularity since there will then be TONs of IP's available. But at this point, they've just only recently brought the IPv6 root servers online so it may be a while before the infrastructure is completely upgraded to support it. In the meantime, we're running out of IPv4 IP's. Kind of like phone numbers. They're finally giving out portable phone numbers. Maybe one of these days that might be possible too, but by then we may not need them to be.
