Full Version: Setting up ns1.domain/ns2.domain without an existing DNS?

Alrighty, now that I got named up-and-running, and Virtualmin is in full swing, I can create virtual servers to my liking.

However, I don't understand how I can register my nameservers with GoDaddy, which requires a fully-qualified domain name already..but if I'm running my OWN nameservers, how is that possible?

For example, I want to setup ns1.domain and ns2.domain as the name servers for my whole network of sites - right now, they'll be on the same IP, maybe I'll change that later.

However, how will those URL possibly resolve if I don't even have my own nameservers up-and-running? It seems like a circular dependency to me.

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it...and let me know if I need to clarify anything.

There is no circular dependency really. In GoDaddy, there are two references which would be of particular interest here and they are 'Nameservers Summary' and 'Domain Host Summary'.

The 'Nameservers Summary' is for you to point a domain name to the existing DNS Servers which would host the entry for your sites in question. This will be the registry containing entries of all sites on your server.

Then there is the 'Domain Host Summary' where you use to point the DNS Servers entry in the root DNS servers which are maintained by internic and so on. This would be the registry of all the DNS Servers around the world.

Whenever you create a new DNS Servers, you would based it on one of your existing domain name. With GoDaddy, go to DOmain Host Summary and enter the DNS Server names which you want and the associated IP address which the DNS Server would be created on. This would provide for the references to the DNS Server.

Of course, at the same time you will need to create the DNS Server on your machine and point them to the same IP Address as you provide GoDaddy. The usual 48 to 72 hours for propagation still applies. Once it is done, you can change the entries in 'nameserver summary' to point to your newly created DNS Servers. Then give that usual 24 to 72 hours for propagation. Then you be done.

We would usually use http://www.dnsreport.com to check to see if the DNS are set up properly and to identify any problems during setup and rectify them.

Thanx, eddy2099, for your excellent response.

However, I went back to GoDaddy, and I couldn't find a screen where I can access "Namerservers Summary"...maybe I just didn't understand what you said correctly, but a little additional guidance is requested. : _D

Log into your Godaddy account using the 'My Account' option. You will be prompted for your login details. This is under the 'Home' on the top left corner at http://www.godaddy.com

After that, look for 'Manage Domains' under 'Domain Names' tab. This is the first item on the left.

Click on the domain name in question, make sure that it is Unlock.. If it is Lock, check the checkbox at the left hand column and click 'Set Locking' on the top. The lock would be disabled within the next 12 hours.

If you click on the domain name, it should show you the 'Domain Details' on the right panel. 'Nameservers Summary' is under the second section. If the details are hidden, click on the '+' to expand that node.

Click on 'Click here to see details or to modify'. There is where you could make the changes.

Your patience and experience is much appreciated...I didn't even see the "Domain Hosts Summary" tab on the right-hand side...after that, everything you said made sense.

I've submitted my ns1 and ns2 domain hosts, and I will wait for those to propagate, and then I will go ahead and set those AS my nameservers.

Thank you for all your advice and help!
