I am the leader of xero elite clan that plays UT04 and we are looking into servers. only problem is that i dont know anything about servers and it is all new to me. we were thinking of getting Super Xeon and i was wondering if i would be able to run a 22-24 person onslaught and a 16 person capture the flag game types off of that server at the same time. and what OS would work better Linux/Windows. i know i might sound stupid and all with these questions but i really am a nOOb when it comes to servers thanks.

yea you'll have plenty of room. As far as O/S go with windows. For more reasons than i care to name. But mainly its newb friendly.

If your looking at the Super Xeon w/ Windows, you might as well consider the P2800 from ThePlanet.

Plenty of power for those. The 2800 from The Planet is a great machine.
Here is a link in case you don't have it, http://www.theplanet.com

As for setting up the game, you can grab the dedicated server file here:
http://www.3dgamers.com/games/unrealtourn2k4/

Then a CD Key here
http://unreal.epicgames.com/ut2004server/cdkey.php

As far as setup, you can ask in the forums, I am sure someone will lend you a hand. You can PM me if you like.

Beware..

If you have no clue as to Server Admin...be careful.

You can rent a game serve cheaper then you can get a dual box from TP.

Just my $0.02

Man I just gotta say, the people in these forums are some of the most helpful people I have ever corresponded with about stuff like this. SM and TP should be greatful for you guys! BTW, that should be plenty of poer for those games.

Why do you say that windows is better than Linux? (Note: this isn't a flame or anything just curious as I'd personally say Linux is a LOT better than Windows for servers. icon_smile.gif But JMHO).

They can use the built in web panel. Doesn't get much easier than that.

That's great, Notice the fact that A. He's a noob so Linux will be confusing. B. Windows 2003 seems to be supported by Game Companies better. C. He must deal with all the patching and such.

Well, Progaming said "more reasons than I care to name". I'd like a list of some of those reasons. icon_smile.gif Back in 98 when NT 4.0 was out, I tried to run a webserver off of it. Was a MISERABLE failure. icon_sad.gif Since then, I've run numerious webservers on Linux with no problems. And since I'm gonna be getting into gaming hosting SOON, I want to know if Progaming is saying this for SPECIFICALLY for gaming or in general or SPECIFICALLY for the original owner.

Also, NT 4.0 is old news. IIS 6 is great. 2003 is extremely stable now.

99% of games are made for windows then someone ports them over. Linux ofcourse is what i use for my webserver but not my game servers. But as in this case it doesnt matter cause noobs have to use windows..othewise they'll be lost. wink.gif
