Full Version: DNS setup for .de registry

We need to host a few ".de" (Germany) domains on our server. The German registry requires the DNS server IPs to be on different IP subnets. Is anyone else here doing this somehow and if so - how? Would SM allow to use their DNS for these ".de" domains?

Thanks for any feedback.

SM does not restrict the use of their DNS Servers for any country. The only condition is that the domain and IP is hosted on one of their servers here.

Basically, you need at least one of your IPs for your nameservers to not be on a consecutive C-class subnet. Simplest way (other than having another server) is to buy another block of IP addresses for your current DNS server and specify to SM that you want a block that is not in your current subnet. Then setup a secondary (or tertiary, etc.) nameserver and point it to an IP on your new block. Register it as a NS with your registrar and there you go.

Of course, this is just a band-aid that will break if your DNS server goes down. I'd advise having multiple DNS servers on at least two separate machines for redundancy purposes.

When I asked this, a couple of weeks ago, I was told that it would be possible to use ServerMatrix's nameservers, as ns1.servermatrix.com and ns2.servermatrix.com are on different subnets. This might be an alternative to asking for another IP block.

Thanks everyone. This (quoted) is probably what I am going to do. There are only a few .de domains that I will need DNS for.

I (a newcomer to ServerMatrix) will be setting up a couple of .de domains in the next month or so, using the same strategy. Perhaps we could both report back here on how it goes

That's also possible if you wish to go this route instead.
