I would like to create a few sub domains and have a few questions. If I add in cpanel do I need to configure a new dns setting or zone. If so where do I go after I create and add on cpanel? I have added a sub domain but it is not working.

If you are hosting your own DNS Servers on the same machine where Cpanel/WHM is installed then you do not need to do anything other then just restarting your BIND DNS Server.

You could just check to see if the DNS Zones are in the server through WHM. There seems to be problem when BIND requires a reload for the DNS changes to be active as it happens at start up.

If you are not hosting your own DNS Servers but using SM's DNS Servers then you need to add the zone manually for each subdomains you create.

I'm not hosting my own dns servers but I'm using SM (ns1.theplanet.com etc.)

i think I know how to add a zone manually but how do I know if I'm doing it right. So if I have 52 sub domains do I need 52 zones? Can you please send me the steps so I can do this properly? Thanks

No, you do not need 52 zones.

First thing to do is to go to Orbit, under Network, click on Domain Admin.

Then select the domain name in question and click Edit Zone.

Then at Standard Resource Records (A,CNAME,TXT) then just type in your subdomain name.

Supposed you have Site1.yourdomain.com and Site2.yourdomain.com as your subdomain.

Find a blank line and type the following :-

Name : site1
Type : A
IP : your subdomain IP address

then look for another line

Name : site2
Type : A
IP : your subdomain IP address

Once you are done, click Submit and then followed by Published. Within 6 hours, the subdomain should be propagated.

If you have 52 sub domains then do it 52 times.

Thank you so much you are great? Do you know anything about
exim and ldap support config. I need to use ldap with exim but can't figure out where to start. Do you work for hire?
eddy2099
Well, basically I don't do Linux. Just don't understand anything about it.

If the price is right, I am definitely open for hire.. Would be more expensive than others cos I'll probably take more time to do what is needed icon_redface.gif

Seriously speaking, you might want to look at http://www.exim.org/ to see if there is anything about it in the documentation.

At the same time, check out http://www.billy.demon.nl/Eximldap.html .

There are probably more sites around with that information, you could use http://www.google.com to do the search like I did.
