Full Version: domain not resolving for some users

I’m having a problem with DNS or something related to it.

My main address (http://allalias.com) resolves; however, for about 40% of users, you can’t get beyond that with addresses like http://allalias.com/affiliates, and even more users can’t access subdomains such as http://forums.allalias.com (while these addresses do work for a lot of people a lot of the time). I’ve turned subdomains on in WHM, and tried restarting Bind and the server numerous times (this sometimes helps temporarily). So I’ve had to use the IP to get around this, directing people to http://69.93.148.130/forums/ and similar addresses, and this seems to work. However, this is really annoying (at first I thought this was just a temporary thing while the changes in my nameservers propagated, but this has now been going on for well over two months). How can I fix the problem and be able to use my domain name for all users? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for your advice icon_smile.gif

Do you have the proper A records and cname records?
AllAlias
Sorry, I don't know what A records and cname records are. Can you explain what they are and how to get/set them?
eddy2099
'A' Records are Address records in the DNS. This would be used to translate a domain name to its IP equivalent. For example, something like

abc.com in A 1.2.3.4

Then the 'CName' are Canonical Names which are aliases. For example

www.abc.com CNAME abc.com
ftp.abc.com CNAME abc.com

How does your DNS Zone looks like ?
AllAlias
In WHM --> DNS Functions --> Edit DNS Zone

I get this page:

Should I change all of those (such as the "forums" row) to allalias.com. from 69.93.148.130?

No, the records themselves look alright, however, you have your NS records set as ns1 and ns2.servermatrix.com. Those should be set to your own DNS servers.

You mean my registrar's, or my own server that I have with SM's (69.93.148.130)?

Thanks for all of the help - I'm new to dedicated servers but was forced into them due to site traffic icon_sad.gif

What he means is at the registrar you have recorded your nameservers as:

Name Server: NS1.ALLALIAS.COM
Name Server: NS2.ALLALIAS.COM
Name Server: NS3.ALLALIAS.COM

But on the zone record you showed us, it is listing

ns1.servermatrix.com
ns2.servermatrix.com

So you should edit the zone and replace the sm nameservers with your own.

Thanks so much! Everything seems to be working now icon_smile.gif
