Full Version: SM DNS servers as secondary of mine

Can we have SM DNS servers become secondary DNS servers? I have 2 DNS servers but I would like a 3rd one for backup but I prefer not to duplicate the zones because I update them constantly. It would be easier for SM DNS servers just to pull them down from the primary.

Was thinking of setting up a 3rd nameservers as well, since both 1st and 2nd are on the same box. Anyone out there know how to do this?
rabbit994
Yep, you need another box. Just set one box to be the secondary. I'm not sure how to do it with BIND however, since I'm using Microsoft DNS. (Which for a microsoft product, it's very nice and robust)

If you submitted a ticket in Orbit, we can slave off of one of your DNS servers. Just be sure to put in there that you wish this added as a slave, the domain you wish added, and then the IP address of the DNS server we can slave off of.

After that, modify your records with your registrar to show us being tertiary.

I tried this and the SM DNS server was reported as a LAME DNS server. Is that how it's supposed to be reporting?

A lame server means that the server is listed as authoritative for a domain, but the DNS server itself is not setup to be authoritative. Chances are, if this was done, then either it wasn't added to our DNS servers, or it wasn't done properly.

or the user forgot to add another

domain.com in NS ns1.servermatrix.com ... (I know this is wrong)

A snip of my trouble ticket...

Unfortunately, I am afraid that we do not allow our nameservers to pull zone information from our customers' servers, due to security concerns. If you would like us to be your secondary nameserver, please submit a DNS request so that we can add the needed zones for you. Once this is done, you should be able to use Orbit to change the records for that zone.

If we can help you further, please let us know. Thanks!

What do you guys think? icon_rolleyes.gif

I think the techs need to get on the same playbook. I haven't started my move. Direct the tech to this thread.

Ben, go and hit all the other support people and tell them to let us use servermatrix' dns as a slave icon_mrgreen.gif (I'd like to do this too, currently have dns1. and dns2. on the same box so wouldn't mind a dns3. somewhere else, but don't want to manually update it all the time)

Something else we could do is looking to create a network of people who just slave off each other. I got 2 boxes (different boxes) that act as name servers. Anyone want to become my 3rd one and I'll slave off of them and you can slave off of me. I'm running Microsoft DNS. PM if interested.
