Full Version: moving from another host and reverse DNS

Hi all,

I'm moving from another host (virtual server) to SM (dedicated server). I want to leave my nameservers on the old server until I migrate all my sites, then update my nameserver with my registrar.

I've moved about half my sites with no issue. Site and email reside on the new server while the nameserver zone files are still on the old server.

I've seen some posts about opening a ticket with SM to create reverse (PTR) records. Also, when I ping my server, I get the xx.xx-xx-xx.reverse.theplanet.com.

At what point would it be best to request the reverse records? And for what domains? If I understand it, I probably want one for my server's hostname (the shared IP for my sites) and for any domain that has it's own IP address.

Can anyone confirm my assumptions? I need a reality check here! Since I havn't had any problems - I don't want to "fix" what isn't "broken"!

Thanks in advance!
Diane

The reverse lookup should return the name of the server.

ie server1.yourdomain.com vs XX.XXX.XXX.XXX-theplanet.com

Or what everyour FQDN is for that server.

Thanks fish for the info.

I still think I should be requesting a reverse DNS for any domains that are IP based. I moved one today and right now it is coming back with the xx.xx.xx.xx.reverse.theplanet.com.

The Ensim box I'm moving from allowed me to edit the reverse entries for my server and I have entries for the IP based domains.

Thanks again!,
Diane
