Full Version: First two IP addresses "reserved"?

I noticed when I ordered my server that the server IP was the third in the block of sequential IP numbers. Are the first two IP numbers "reserved" for nameservers?

Also, should I be able to ping all IP's? For some reason I can only ping the first three in the block.

Actually, a block contains 3 unusable IP's so if you ordered 4, you get 1, 8, get 5, 16, get 13, etc. You loose the 1st couple and the last 1. These are for routing and other administrative purposes.

Off the top of my head, the first is your router. The last is a broadcast.

If you're using Cpanel/WHM you need to add them under "IP Functions" in WHM. Probably a good idea to keep them unpingable if you're not doing anything with them though.

1+1=2

First is router (gateway)
Last is broadcast

The other what is?

Sorry, i'm not so strong in network administration anyway... can someone explain me this?
alex042
The 3 are network, gateway, broadcast.

an 8 ip example:
69.56.1.1 network
69.56.1.2 gateway
69.56.1.3 useable ip
69.56.1.4 useable ip
69.56.1.5 useable ip
69.56.1.6 useable ip
69.56.1.7 useable ip
69.56.1.8 broadcast

You pay for 8 ip's even though you can only use 5 so its better to buy more if you can use them because if you order 4, 3 of them are already used up so you basically only get 1 for the price of 4 whereas with 8, you get 5 for the price of 8, etc.

Thx...

Thanks everyone. I've removed the first two and the last one from my IP pool.

On a related note, if I choose to set up my own nameservers, would I need to use any special IP's out of the remaining ones? Should I even have a secondary nameserver IP so close to the primary IP?
alex042
If you setup both nameservers on the same server, it doesn't really matter if the ip's are next to each other or not because if 1 goes down, they both go down anyway.

When SM gave you your IP's didn't they tell you which ones are usable? How many did they give you total?
JJ
I got a block of 27 IP's. No they never mentioned any being unusable. I had to find that out whan I added the first two to my IP pool and everything quit working icon_sad.gif
