I am very sorry to have to ask. I've been through lots of posts here and a few good "Hot to's" but I'm still a bit unsure about a few things regarding nameservers.

I've been runnning websites for 8 years now but never as a dedicated server but now it's time to move to one. we've bought one at server Matrix and I'm currently setting it up but ran into a few questions ....

Background: our main site (www.bjorn3d.com) will be moved when we are finished with the new site on the new server. We've registered www.bjorn3d.net to use on the server during development.

1/ We are currently only going to run the server for our own site, not as a reseller. Do we need to set up our one nameservers or can we just use Server Matrix'es nameservers? In the mail we got from them it says:

"If you need nameservers for this server, you can use the following:
ns1.servermatrix.com 216.185.111.10
ns2.servermatrix.com 69.56.222.10"

I'm just a bit unsure how to set up nameservers in WHM. Since we have registered bjorn3d.net, could we use ns1.bjorn3d.net and ns2.bjorn3d.net and use 2 of the 5 IP's we've got with the dedicated server for them?

I looked at this site: http://www.hostinglife.com/dns.php - is this the correct way to do it here to? I just go to my networksolutions-login, put in ns1.bjorn3d.net and ns2.bjorn3d.net and then ask SM to setup a reverse DNS for these 2?

If we use Servermatrix nameservers - do I have to setup anything in WHM or should I just disable nameserver in the service manager?

2/ If I set up the nameservers as stated above with ns1.bjorn3d.net etc. - I guess I still will be able to set up www.bjorn3d.net on the server for development? Do I just set up an Cpanel account for that domain?

Hopefully I'm slowly getting ahang on administrating the server but I just thought I check if I had understood this correctly before starting to work.

Thanks in advance
Björn

1)Yes, register them at your Domain name register. And do the Intial Nameserver Setup'(There's a how-to guide here somewhere).

2)Is the serverName something like e.i: host1.bjorn3d.net .
If so, then yes.

You still need to run the same procedures with the NameServer setup as with a webhosting server.

BTW, why did you chose cPanel. You're going to have to keep up on the security updates & bugs they have. icon_rolleyes.gif

Well the thing about Cpanel/WHM is that sometimes customers requests for it and if you do not have it you may lose the sales. Sadly sometimes in business is about giving what the customers wants and not the issue of what is best or more bug free it is.

Thats why it's not needed since they are only using it for there personal sites.

Thanks! In the end I went ahead and tried to follow the guides and it all seem to have went well (until yesterday yhat is, more on that in another post).

Even though we probably just will run 1 site here right now in the future we probably will move in more sites. I already know at least one more that I want to move here. Also having a dedicated server gives us more control compared to what we've experienced earlier with Virtual Hosts. I've mainly been running Windows servers at work/home and administrated sites in Virtual Host 'mode' on Linux servers so I do need to get up to speed on keeping a dedicated server up and running but I'm sure it will be no problem after a few weeks of learning. I've already set up a Linux box at home again just so I can tinker with it.

Thanks for the replies!
