Man I have read so many post about DNS and I am more confused now.

I have a domian: mydomain.com

I need to set it at the registar up as I am guess.
ns1.mydomain.com
ns2.mydomain.com

How do I set MS DNS to work with this, what all needs to be done.

Currently DNS works, I can browse the internet, so it is forwarding fine. Just not sure or understand how to make the domains work for the ones I host for my business.

Any help would be great.

This is what I have at my Registar. Is this correct? I did Register my nameservers as well. What else do I need to do, how do I set up MS DNS? I think I have it but I am not sure. Help would be appreciated very much.

Domain Name: MYDOMAIN.COM
Registrar: ENOM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.enom.com
Referral URL: http://www.enom.com
Name Server: NS1.MYDOMAIN.COM
Name Server: NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM
Status: ACTIVE
Updated Date: 22-mar-2004
Creation Date: 17-jul-2003
Expiration Date: 17-jul-2005

How many domains do you have? In many scenarios, there's no need to run your own DNS off the same server. It's also a bad idea since you have no real backup DNS server...if your sever goes down, your DNS goes down for everything.

If it's under 5. I suggest using ZoneEdit.com. Or you can use ServerMatrix (The Planet) DNS which is included in your plan and setup in Orbit. Both options are free and work very well. ZoneEdit is also good for DNS newbies since it holds your hand a bit while you set things up.

Over 5, but they change infrequently - use the SM DNS like mentioned above.

I use both options myself. SM DNS for more static domains, and ZoneEdit for domains I change a lot.

If you really need to setup your own DNS, then you need to use the DNS configuration MMC in Win2K3 to add entries for the Domains you want to host. I believe it's under "Administrative tools". If you're asking for details like "What's an MX record" and other basic questions, then you should go over to MS's TechNet or another website and start reading about configuring DNS.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

Currently iit is 5 domains. But I am working on hosting for just a certain area of customers and hope to grow to around 25 this year, maybe more depends on things. I plan on when i get to about 10 domains, to get a 2nd server as well, and have a backup DNS, and move somethings off the primary server too.

I have MS DNS setup, tiwh host records, CNAME' s and MX record. I have my regiistat register my Namesever, but so far it doesn't work. Maybe I am triying to quick, but it has been 24 hours.
