Hmm.. I dunno what's going on with my server but it seems to have pegged 99% a few times yesterday.
I've never seen my server over 60% usuage before now.
Do you guys ever see your servers hit 99% for short periods or no ?
Should I be panicking at this point?
I only have Quake based servers, CS and Day of Defeat on it.

My CoD servers (1.1) do that occasionally. Have to kill the process and restart the server (gameserver, not machine). I haven't been able to narrow it down to any kind of cause. It only seems to do it after 3-4 days though.
My 1.2 server has never done that, but its rarely full. The 1.1's are full 24/7 so maybe its fixed in 1.2 or maybe its just when they're under heavy load for a long time.
Another guy I know hosts a 1.1 server as well, and he has the same trouble. We've been trying to figure out when/why it happens, but no luck so far except for the 3-4 day thing.

I do have one COD 1.2 I just added not sure if its the problem. I'm running about 9 TS voice servers on the box too but most of my game servers are empty most of the time.
This is on a Super Gamers 3Ghz with 2GB ram.
I haven't had anyone complain about any lag spikes or any problems but it worries me a bit.

I had one go for about 6 hours before I noticed it stuck. The other server was still full and never got any complaints of lag, even though CPU was pegged at 99%.

Wow.. maybe I shouldn't worry about it then unless I get complaints.
I've been using SM's Ipalert to monitor my system.

does it stay at 99% or does it jump there at short intervals?
DeadTed
Mar 23 2004, 12:11 AM
just jump but yesterday was the only time i ever saw it do that. Just jumped a few times and IPalert sent me some emails about it.
Right now CPU average is 40-60% and I'm not planning on putting anything else on the box.

Do others have access to the game servers on your box? They may have been changing maps which will give the CPU a run for its money, or maybe some other hidden process you dont know about. You just never know. On my home server there was like 600mb of the 700mb ram on the server being used and the normal is like 2-300 so it was much higher than normal, and i didnt know why. I just left it alone and today its all good back to normal, probably just a few server using a lot of ram for maps or something who knows but i wouldnt worry too much about it.

yeah, i guess so. I only saw it one night and haven't seen it go above 90% since then.

well i saw it happen again and it did lag everyone on the server. I had people on CS, ET, RTCW and COD servers at the time on the box.
I noticed a guy patched his COD server with 1.3 incorrectly not sure if that was the trouble.
I really dont think my problems started until that COD server was added.
If it happens again I'll move that COD server to another box.
anyone else having CPU probs running COD servers ?? I expected it to be the same resources as other quake based games.

Oh yeah man COD is a hog for cpu resources and system memory. I would take a look at both of those things, but if you have all the servers set to low priority that should solve the lag problem. Oh and one thing if this is not a dual proc you should take that COD server off ASAP
DeadTed
Mar 24 2004, 01:37 AM
I'll try that. I didn't know COD could hog resources like that.

cod hog resources??
Cod only does 4-5% cpu on a dual xeon 16 player

Maybe it was because he didn't install his 1.3 patch correctly then I dont know.
It has me stumped a bit. Guess I'll have to keep watching it.
I checked and noticed by default COD was the only one set at low priority. RTCW and other games were set to normal or real time if that makes any difference.

On my COD servers I give em an ole restart every morning about 6:30 AM. the older version of the linux server had a memory leak which would get out of control.
On a side note I run around 15% cpu with 32 people on the pub (HQ).
I also run our match server at the same time and 2 counter-striek servers.
I would think that if someone was yappin a bunch on your voice servers then that is what your problem could be..
DeadTed
Mar 24 2004, 11:34 AM
That could be it also. Since I'm running 9 TS servers on the same box.
I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it and try to pinpoint it if it happens again.
Could be that just now I'm seeing a true stress test on my server since about 4 servers I just rented have become more active.
There probably was 50-60 people playing in different games at the time.
If I remember right this is what was running with players on it:
1 RTCW server, 16 players
1 COD 12 players
1 ET server 18 players
1 CS Server 12 players on
1 CS Server 14 players
Couple more empty servers. so that was about 50-60 people playing at the time.
9 TS Voice servers, not sure how many were being used but I expect a few.
Serverdoc running on all servers.
System specs again are: Supergamers, 2GB ram, Win 2003 server.

i wouldnt worry about it unless you see the proc high for an extended period of time

I found my problem I'm pretty sure. As dumb as this is..
I'm using Tiny Personal Firewall and it has an extra Appilcation called Activity Monitor that displays all the outgoing/incoming activity and what process they are using.
I just saw my CPU was at 80% so i went and looked. the firewall's Activity Monitor application was using 40% + of the CPU.
That was not required to run the firewall so I closed that application and I think I should be all good again.
Glad I was there to catch it at the time.

Should all games be set to run at low priority ?
I notice that CS servers are set to low but default for Enemy Territory servers is "Real Time" which i think is the highest priority ?
anyone know?
I also have 12 Teamspeak servers running. I have no idea how much CPU they might use.
They aren't full at the same time of course.

Teamspeak servers use barley any cpu they mainly just use ram. When i have about 300users on my ts cpu is like 1 and ram is about 25mb

Mar 28 2004, 01:53 AM
yeah man gameservers should run on low priority
DeadTed
Mar 28 2004, 02:04 PM
Hmm.. maybe game programs were fighting each other for priority then causing high CPU spikes because some were running low and some high I was letting them run at the program defaults.
I'm setting them all low to see if that changes anything.
jangles
Mar 28 2004, 06:06 PM
yeah man if that one is running at high priority that means it will take presidence to everything else the computer is doing. Therefore lagging out all the other server at map changes etc.
