What's your average memory you like to install in your servers ?
I don't have a problem maxing my CPU's but I do run out of memory pretty quick when I only have 1 GIG in a machine running a couple of games.
I do run Win servers though I would guess linux takes less ram.
So... do you guys run 2GB ram or ??
another question for the server folks. I need to buy some servers for colocation.
I could get a Dell P4 standard system for colo for about $800 or so. If I look at buying a P4 1U server prices are looking well over $1000 easily.
The colo center doesnt care about my server size so what would be the benefit of spending more money for a 1U box ?
thanks as always for your tips and advice

Well persoannly i prefer to build the machines if i colo. You get more for your money than something like dell where you pay loads and get less. Unless you have some kind of deal with them.

it depends on the game/system specs you plan to run. if your doing something like COD on a dual xeon then you want at least 2gb of ram (more if possible) otherwise if you have a 2.8ghz p4 1gb of ram should do.
Windows can use less ram than linux depending on the config/extras installed on the os.
If you can afford to build systems for colo then build them from scratch. Also remember that Dual Xeons usualy need a intel chassis as they dont come with fans and require the cooling ducts of the chassis to keep them cool.
a 1u case only really has the advantage of using less space and costing less/mo in colo that DOES care about space used. Also in an corporate environment you have a higher cpu density with the 1u cases - something like Pixar and such REALLY need.

Yeah, I'll just build one I guess. I always have built my own machines anyway.
I'll just need to shop around for good parts costs.
thx for info

You can grab a 2.8 HT 800FSB Tower from Dell for less then $600 which would be about the same configuration as the SuperGamerz here.
Going with 1U's would be a good bet in the long run but I wouldn't advise building it if you have never built a rack machine before especially 1U's as they use special blower units and everything has to be exact or you will run into problems down the road. If you look around you should be able to find a few places that can sell you the complete machine for less then you can build it for.
In comparison the machine you rent now is basically the same parts that you have in your home machine. IE: Plain white tower, Standard Ram, MB, CPU, IDE Drives.
Most places like colomachine.com or rackmountsetc.com will build you a "server" IE: server grade parts, ECC Ram, Server grade MB etc..
So either way the choice is yours.

Thanks for links and info. Now I just have to figure out what I want to do..
I have the 2.8 and 1 Gb ram. I have never seen it spike or run constant over 34%
So you should be good there.
On a Dual CPU box go with 2 GB ram....twice as much of everything....lol

Well I'm trying to decide right now if I want to fork over the cash and buy a dual xeon server or one that is about the same as a super gamers here.
I've never used a dual server before. Are duals really as awesome as people say compared to a super gamers ?
It seems some people have said there is really not too much a difference. You should be able to double the load of what you put on a super gamers though right ?

In wouldn't spend more money on anything over a gig of ram for a gaming server (unless you had a dual proc.) . I don't know what games you are running that make you run out of ram . ...but something must be wrong if you are capable of running out of ram before your processor dumps .

No load would be maybe 10% more if you went with a dual. We have several of each duals and single HT's and yes we can fit more on the duals but not alot more... If price is a factor then stay with a HT proc. But make sure it is 800mhz FSB
