Full Version: Hostname... not resolving, yet?

I just recently changed my hostname to the correctly formatted FQDN. I cannot access it (yet) but I can get to the root domain (i.e., I can't get to server.domain.com, but can get to domain.com).

I was under the impression that this should be near-instantaneous, b/c it's not a nameserver change... is this the case, and I'm doing something wrong?

Or does the hostname have to also propagate through the world... and I've done it right?

Did you do this on the machine only or did you add it to your DNS as well?
michaelpwalton
The machine is functioning as a DNS server and there is an A entry for the FQDN.

It should take effect as soon as you make the change, unless the dns server you're using has cached the answer.

How are you trying to access it? In a web browser? Go here and see if you can resolve the name.

Cannot resolve the full name...

Any hints on where to start debugging?

Double and triple check your zone files and make sure other names in that domain resolve. What is the FQDN you're trying to resolve?
michaelpwalton
buford.threerhombi.net

The zone file was setup in WHM. Added A record through WHM. Threerhombi.net and other test clients resolve.

It is not in /etc/named though, and my resolv.conf references threerhombi.net, not buford.threerhombi.net.

Should I go about manually adding this? Not sure what to do here.

Ok, now it makes sense, you have the name servers for your domain set to ns1.theplanet.com and ns2.theplanet.com, when I do a dns lookup against your ip [69.93.191.106] everything works [notice the ip in the server field]. Are you trying to run your own dns servers or do you want to use theplanet's?
michaelpwalton
I was trying to setup my own nameservers, but have Server Matrix / The Planet's nameservers resolve threerhombi.net. Am I mixing colors in the wash?

Perhaps. Unless we are doing secondaries for you, you would need to go into Orbit to make any DNS changes for zones that we host. Anything that you do on your server will not propogate if you have us listed as the authoritative servers.

I am trying to get something setup such that if my server goes down, mail will still be routed correctly. However, I don't want to lose control over DNS...

Back to the original question, I am guessing this little bit of a NS mess is the root of the problem for buford.threerhombi.net resolving.

No problem, you just need to make your dns server the master and theplanet's slaves, then any changes you make would propagate to their dns servers. Just make sure your changing the SOA when you update the zones.

Alright. Sounds good. But, I'm a little bit in the dark about how to go about doing this... half of me wants to use WHM (which is clunky) and half of me just wants to know what files to edit on the box.

Thanks very much in advance guys.

Since I've never used WHM I have no idea how to do it from there. If you wanted to do it yourself you'll need to edit /etc/named.conf and your zone files in /var/named. (You are using bind, right?) If you need specific help you can pm me.
