I just tried to install snort 2.1.1-1 and thought it would be easier with a .rpm.

When I ran it it gave me these errors and then exited :

CODE
rpm -i snort-2.1.1-1.i386.rpm

warning: user snort does not exist - using root

warning: group snort does not exist - using root

chown: `snort.snort': invalid user

What do I need to do about this? I thought the .rpm would do everything for me, including creating users.

Do I need to add the user & group myself
Matt Brown
try creating the group and user yourself and see if that fixes it

Doh, I forgot to do chattr -i /etc/passwd ...

I installed it via rpm -i .. is it normal that it didn't output anything?

I was following this tutorial http://www.linuxsecurity.com/feature_stori...rt-guide-2.html and it mentions this file 00 00 * * * root /usr/sbin/snort-update -q

I can't find this file anywhere on my system. Is this tutorial outdated?

Edit: nevermind, it may be a custom file delivered by that site..

Ugh..does anyone know an easy to follow install, configure, test, run tutorial for installing snort? preferably as recent as possible ( 2.1.1 )
