Full Version: ntbackup messing USB TA up

This isn't a question relating to Server Matrix but I think this is the best place to ask.

I maintain our win2003 server at work and we've in the process of migrating data from our old NT server systems. I've been setting up and testing the scheduled NTbackup which works fine apart from one little problem.

Every time it runs (backing up data directories and system state onto another hot swap drive) NTbackup knocks out our USB ISDN terminal adaptor drivers. Thus been unable to dial in on ISDN until I either reinstall them the next day or dial in via analogue.

Why it does this I don't know, but any ideas greatly appreciated.

Exclude the required files for the ISDN and there shouldn't be an issue. I'm assuming it's an open file lock that's causing an issue

I'll ask one other thing. Is the server by chance a Compaq 1850R? I only ask because RHL 9 will hang up on installation unless you run linux /nousb. The 1850R I'm "playing with" doesn't even HAVE USB ports on it, but it's a known problem between this server and RHL 9. That tells me there may be something flaky in the implementation of USB on that model. Shot in the dark of course, but worth asking I guess.

It's a HP Prolient 512.

Any idea how to resolve it?

exclude the files that keep getting corrupted. You could stop the program/service that uses them before the backup, but I'm guessing those files are very static and a backup from today and one from 6 months from now will be the same.

Simple yet effective, I'm only backing up data files and system state not windows files. I'll try just data and see how that goes.

I ran a backup last night in the early hours and I've just successfully dialed in via ISDN.
The only thing I changed is that it's not backing up the system state. Not an issue, I can do that manually every week or so.

For reference the troublesome device is a Diva 850 ISDN USB TA.
