Okay, I am in a quandry. Just recently we hit about the 60% capacity level on our main Web Hosting Server its a P4 2.4ghz with 512MB of Ram with $130/Month for everything.

Well, We just nagged two large clients that will put us at like 90% capacity, and one of them will be pushing ALOT of BW.

Now we will be needing to get another server and are wondering what you guys have done when you reached cap on your main server icon_razz.gif

1) We are thinking up upgrading to a Dual Xeon at The Planet $220/Month
Pros:
-Not many, since better server but got to move all clients.

2) Get a Celeron for our large High BW users, and toss them on it.
Pros:
-Help increase their Teeny Margings.
Cons:
-Not sure how well Celes will output 500GB/Month

3) Get another P4
Pros:
-They rock and another P4 with 1GB of ram, may be better for our shared clients.
Cons:
-Price wise, isnt much better then xeon.

dont think you need to be a large host to answer this one, upgrading is too much of a hassle. If youve got a box that works, dont scrap it! "if it aint broke dont fix it"

grab yourself a superserver 2.4 pentium, or super server 2.8 pentium. Both come with a gig of ram.

What's at 90% capacity? CPU? Ram? hdd? network? Upgrade depending on what needs the upgrading. icon_smile.gif

why keep one server?

keep the box youve got and off load some clients to a new p4 or something, will save alot of hassle and greif from customers while your moving there site to a new server and at the same time allow for expansion

Getting an additional machine would makes sense. No point going through the hassle of moving then finding out that you run out of resources in no time. Spilting the load would be beneficial for all involved.

Make sure that the two big clients compensate you enough for the two machines.

Celeron can output 500GB+ easy. I can do that in a day on my server if Im not careful.

Take a look at our specials in Orbit. One of them is on the P4-2.4. We can get a new one setup for you right away. icon_biggrin.gif
