Full Version: Plesk, H-Sphere or DirectAdmin instead of CPanel for FreeBSD

I'll admit, CPanel was very badly coded with FreeBSD. It has bugs poping up and they seem to worry about making their product more useable on all os's (even with bugs in hand) than fixing the current problems. I have basically started to give up on CPanel for these reasons. They have not cleaned up any bugs they have in many of the operating systems (including Red Hat which they are based on) and frankly their support team does not seem to care much.

So is there another option that ServerMatrix is going to have instead of CPanel? EV1 allready includes Plesk with FreeBSD and I was curious to know if ServerMatrix is going to be taking it up a notch and offer a stable control panel with FreeBSD.

Current Control Panels that I have talked with representatives and have found out to be fully compliant with FreeBSD:
Plesk
H-Sphere

Current Control Panels that claim they are working with FreeBSD but have bugs or are in development:
Direct Admin (my choice)
CPanel

I do not think that CPanel actually even cares about the FreeBSD market and my only other alternatives are either Plesk or H-Sphere. At the moment Plesk is looking like a very nice promising control panel competitor especially when 7.0 comes out. Direct Admin would be my top choice out of all of them for FreeBSD (but they are still developing). They do have a current version for 5.0,5.1,5.2 and it seems to be running rather smoothly and it is only in BETA mode! CPanel has a control panel (or states so) and it isn't in beta and it isn't even fully compliant.

I would also like to make a plea with ServerMatrix to not allow CPanel with FreeBSD for many of the techs, Klaude can back me up since he too has stated this, claim it is soo damn buggy. ServerMatrix is basically giving them business but CPanel seems to refuse the main issues and bugs for it. People may have no problems with FreeBSD and that is only due to luck. When things start to break down on there, they REALLY start to break down hard. CPanel representatives do not seem to care much and they only seem to focus on the new Pro version coming out (which is just addon's to the allready buggy CPanel).

At the moment I am considering alternative methods for a control panel (even hiring a team to build one on my own) and I sincerely hope that ServerMatrix will forward this message to the boss's and sit and have a long chat about offering a good, fully compatible control panel system for FreeBSD.

Heck if you don't want to talk about it, just PM me with a time and place and I'll gladly talk about it for them.

I know ServerMatrix is here to offer great quality services. I also know that ServerMatrix, EV1, and all other big companies know of the BSD problems encountered with CPanel and many just don't offer CPanel because of it. Instead they find alternative methods for FreeBSD such as plesk or direct admin.

I don't want to take your thread off topic, but I would very much appreciate if you could list the specific bugs you've found with cPanel on FreeBSD.

I've asked a few times in various forums and have yet to get a list of specific problems with cPanel on FreeBSD - it seems there are many very general concerns but very few if any specific details on what doesn't work correctly and I'm very curious since I'm looking seriously at getting two FreeBSD cPanel servers.

1) SSH does not work
2) Destroys quota kernel
3) Destroys Kernel so you cannot reboot
4) Poorly coded port system
5) Unlmiited features do not work for some reason
6) Password change via CPanel does not work *Fixed by Technician*
7) Full integration with the CPanel system for FreeBSD does not workk. THey have redhat files which need editing by their own support team. All installations contain RedHat file names which need to be edited by CPanel support
8 ) Support takes weeks to answer
9) Bugs that were there from older version which they still have to clean up.
10) They seem to be more into creating new version ideas and making them work on all OS's rather than sitting down and fixing everything.
11) Even their support team has no idea what they are doing. Last night they crashed the entire server and I had to call Tech Support. Klaude you answered me so you know what happend icon_wink.gif. I recognize that voice icon_cool.gif
UserExperience
You're probably aware of the fact that DA for BSD 4.x has been out of beta for some time now and that the amount of problems that people experience is pretty small.

I'd go with DA if you're already familiar with it. Nice feature/quality ratio.

HSphere is ok if you don't want to resell, but you need a more powerfull server or even two to start with. Pretty reliable on FreeBSD. Problems lie elsewhere.
FarCry
there are at least 2 server matrix resellers in these forums who offer DA as well and get internal pricing. DA is VERY good quality software. Its resouce usage is almost non-existant, its faster than any other control panel out there, and most of all, its extremely simple to use!
