What can I expect to host on 1 of these servers? Can I get 2 32 player servers off of this box? P4 2.8 with 1 gig of RAM.
SilveR
you may be able too, but if they are both full at the same time expect some lag.
Dinosaur Gas
Ok, been running both servers for a few days now. Neither has been really busy as of yet, and the server seems to be handling them just fine....so far. I have the bandwidth throttling at 256 each way, using bfsm...do I really need to use this function?

You may need to use the bandwidth throttle if both servers begin staying full near 24/7. Keep a daily watch on your graphs in Orbit to see if you are nearing 1TB of bandwidth usage.

BF1942 does take up a lot of CPU so you might need to drop the 32 players down to a smaller size if you notice your CPU maxing out. Your RAM is just fine however. If your running linux watch over CPU usage with the command 'top'.

Good luck and have fun!

1TB?! Do they really use that much bandwidth?!

Roughly 10 Kilobytes per player at any given time, is a fair assumption, if you leave the server unthrottled.

The game likes bandwidth and likes CPU icon_wink.gif.

Altho the CPU usage at least in the Linux server has been VASTLY improved with the 1.6 patch that game out yesterday, gj Dice/EA.

Yep, BF is a Hog in all respects..I do not run it for that reason !!

We run a 40 player BF Desert Combat Server, Teamspeak and website on our server with no issues. And we used to have a 20 player CS Server in the same box.

I have no complaints about our server or SM.

Of course we run Linux icon_biggrin.gif

If you guys throttle the bandwidth and get the proper server to host a 32 man and up BF1942 server(s) then it will go fine.

A proper server would be a dual xeon or 3.0

BTW Don't even try running 2 STABLE 32 man servers off a 2.8 icon_razz.gif , it will not happen. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hehe, I know some kid who pesters me, and swears he can run 8 counterstrike servers on a 2.8 . I simply say you can, but when their all full, guess whats gonna happen......

Right now, I have the following:

2 UT Servers
1 UT2k3 Server
2 CounterStrike Servers

My 512mb RAM is starting to cause problems, but the CPU is fine. Averages 60-70% with the servers full. With all servers empty, the CPU idles at 3%.

I tried this setup:

1 UT Server
1 CS Server
1 BF1942 Server

The BF server filled, with 32 players, and the server dropped. The other game servers were empty. With the above setup, the CPU idled at 40%.

I would STRONGLY suggest the Dual Xeon server. I have a friend that has 2 BF servers, and 5 UT servers, 1 UT2k3 server, and 3 Voice servers running with a max CPU usage of 56%, 94% when several servers hit mapchange at the same time.

I myself will be upgrading to the Dual Xeon very soon!

Brag,
I think he could run 8 CS servers. Question is this. Is it CS 1.5 or 1.5 ?
THen the next thing is anyone on them.....hehehehe

Or he could have 8 CS servers running and the player amount set to like 8 players per server.......hmmm
Brag
yea 8 player limits maybe, but he's thinking of 32 and 24 man servers,

haha

Try the maths, if you have 2x32player servers maxed for 6 hours per day, and 1 full for the rest of the day:

Peak Time
--------------
6 hours, 64players, 10kb/sec
10 x 64 (total kb/sec for both servers)
640kb/sec

640 x 60 (total kb/minute)
38,400kb/min

38,400 x 60 (total kb/hour)
2,304,000kb/hour

2,304,000 x 6 x 30.5 (total kb/mo)
421,632,000kb (402.10GB/month.. ouch)

Off Peak Time
-------------------
18 hours, 32 players, 10kb/sec
10 x 32 (total kb/sec)
320kb/sec

320 x 60 (total kb/min)
19,200kb/min

19,200 x 60 (total kb/hour)
1,152,000

1,152,000 x 18 x 30.5 (total kb/mo)
632,448,000kb (603.15GB/month)

Total:
421,632,000 + 632,448,000
1054080000kb (1,005.25GB)

i have a 2.8 myself..i run 32 player dc servers just for kicks...prolly 40 players between them all...cpu was at about 35% but the spikes were hitting 80% with no map changes...as soon as i shut down the BFSM v20.4b the spikes stopped...and the cpu settled down..BFSM has issues..keep it off and servers are real stable..
