Full Version: Outage or just heavy usage?

Is anyone else having low upload speeds? I'm somewhere in the 2800 bps range but downloading from my server seems okay.. Anyone?!?!

Also, pages are loading choppy from this forum so it may indeed be in the datacenter. Pings and tracerts look normal however icon_confused.gif

My windows server is downloading (not uploading) really slow... I don't upload much but download much more from the server. I can download certain sites from my home that takes forever from servermatrix server.

Tracert and ping looks ok.

Is there a network outage? The bandwidth usage on AboveNet seems to be peeking over the max. Is this the cause of the problem?

Slim
clearsignal
I'm showing around 20% to 40% packet loss connecting to the entire planet network thru above.net

216.200.88.141.available.above.net 30% then a jump to
car1-2-v2.dllstx2.theplanet.com 20%

I guess if it's originating from above.net, there's not much SM can do?

same here....Dropping packets coming from above.net....

Yep slow uploads to the server right now.

Thanks, then I can leave my ISP alone. They have a bad habbit of throttling my bandwidth if they suspect their users are using P2P.

Yeah, I pretty much tracked it down to AboveNet, but wouldn't the others kick in? I think maybe DOS and the new system is preventing us from uploading to the network. Seems to connect slow but within a few seconds, what says estimated 13 minutes turns to 100 minutes so it's slowing down to a crawl on the upload....
ToddW
WOW!

I thought it was just me!!

I was uploading at like 200bits a second!! Took me > 10min to upload 800KB!!!

It's been on/off like this since this morning for me.. (PST)
wcharnock
Can you guys post some sample sites that I can test to? I've checked and don't see any issues that I can identify, and AboveNet claims that there are no known issues on their side.
c0bra
I've just sent you a private message William.
bigdaddybryce
i have also experience very slow upload speeds..but then again the bw usage graph in orbit is ALL green and no white
ToddW
It took this forum site 30 seconds to load.
And I can't upload HTML pages or work on my site the speeds are so slow.

Yet when I do a tracert the highest lag time I get is 60ms, and that's as SOON as I hit the Above network.. before that i'm in the 15s..

Ping 0% Packet Loss.. it's a Hit or Miss kinda thing.. but overall uploading and page loading is terrible because it's not 1bit its like 15-30kb...

Argh.. so slow!!
Matt Brown
Seems like it just picked back up over here, It went like real slow for about 5 mins icon_sad.gif
c0bra
My uploads are still terrible.... I can't upload more than 16,384 bytes of data before the connection just freezes. I ran a trace and sent to William but it looks pretty normal as far as I can tell.
ToddW
Yep mine looks normal too but upload sucks!!
wcharnock
OK - please clarify...

Upload meaning sending data from your local machine to your server at SM or from SM to your local machine?

If from your local to SM, please send me both the IP you are coming from, as well as a sample traceroute so I can dig into this a little more.
c0bra
I've already private messaged you a traceroute William. icon_biggrin.gif

My issue is uploading data from my local machine to SM server.
MN-Robert
Level3 went down for like 15 minutes around 5 mintes ago. Things are still very slow

Exactly, I'm trying to put a 21MB file on my server, it usually takes about 2 minutes. But right now, my estimated time (from FTP software) says about 100 minutes!!!

I've sent a support ticket but you guys must be overwhelmed icon_sad.gif

Again - I need a traceroute from your local workstation to your server please...

Thanks

BTW, download speeds are normal. I can pull that same size file from my server in about 30 seconds.

Pings and traceroutes look fine.

BTW, this 65kb file took about 2 minutes to upload icon_mad.gif

Large amount of packetloss On abovenet. Traceroute posted in orbit.

I just prepended our route advertisements to AboveNet. Can you test your uploads and let me know if it helped?

Thanks

I updated your ticket - I think perhaps Kevin is misunderstanding what it is we can and can't do... At any rate, if you can answer the questions in the ticket I'll see what I can do.
c0bra
Fixed here too now. Thanks alot William.

Oh yeah! About 70,000 bytes per second. About 100x faster than before. The 21MB file took only 5 minutes to go up. I have about 900k up...

Thanks!

wcharnock, I updated my Ticket again For your reply. Thank for looking into this for me.

Can someone explain what caused this failure icon_question.gif

I don't have an explanation from our provider. The short answer is that there is some kind of slowdown in the AboveNet network impacting only inbound traffic to us. I've prepended our routes so that most of the inbound traffic that was coming through AboveNet is now coming through our other providers and this seems to have improved the situation.
ToddW
wcharnock - I just put in a reboot ticket. For some reason the server just died. No response to SSH or APACHE... But I could ping and tracert just fine... Up only 1 day, if this continues can we look into the hardware..

Thanks

Thanks wcharnock, I just want to know what I'm talking about if faced with this situation again and I can explain it to someone there.

My site traffic is coming back up normal. Is there any mechanism for ServerMatrix to automatically prepend routes if one line is slow so that this situation doesn't happen again?

Great tech support by the way! Keep up the good work. icon_smile.gif

I'd suggest you ask a tech to login to the console before rebooting to see if there are any panic messages or anything else...

If you think there might be a hardware issue, you'll need to troubleshoot that through the NOC. Just open a ticket in Orbit and someone should grab it quickly.

There aren't any automatic mechanisms for this, the dynamics involved make automating the detection and correction of an issue like this quite complex.

Since this is the second time I've seen this issue in the last 2 weeks, I'm inclined to leave the as prepending in place permanently. I'll decide on this tomorrow after some sleep... :-)

William,

I wonder if you prepended routes to take care of uploading as well as downloading?

Right now, I'm logged into my Windows server and if I download a web page on IE within my server (opening a browser inside my server), it still seems rather slow.

That's what the prepending was for - try downloading some large files to your server from sites outside the SM network and see how transfer times look.
Testtube
I Highly Back the idea of leaving it the way it is now With all the traffic NOT going threw abovenet icon_razz.gif

Indeed this has happened 2 times somewhat recently If you are going to be changing back to the old routing scheme Is there some way i can get setup for my set of servers to go threw what i consider better routing? icon_razz.gif

I must applaude SM/TP for their great interaction here. Most companies would try to hide things like this from their customers, thinking it's too techinal. At least you explained it the way it is, and told us what you did rather then try to add marketing jargon and other crap. Keep up the good work guys!
