I am guessing it goes from their switches because 4 days ago I was down for 40 minutes while my server was attacked I believe. From the log reports my firewall blocked it then crashed my system. But it looks like from the report that it doesnt take that into account, is that right?

What monitoring service are you using? If your server crashes any good monitoring service should pick that up and report it as downtime.

Assuming the monitoring service is correct, it might be that your server did not crash and still reachable from whereever the monitoring service is monitoring from.
I hate to think that a monitoring service cannot do the very thing it is set up for and that is to monitor servers uptime.

Well I know for a fact that it wasnt reachable for around 40 minutes. So maybe it wasnt down? Just guessing the attack just stoped us from getting in. Quote from tech, "Looking over these logs, it looks like the firewall was getting hit pretty hard around this time and for some time before that. It may be that the firewall locked the server up. If this continues, please let us know." So I guessing it wasnt down, per say

Viper,
For what its worth, we've never suffered an attack to that extent, so I don't know if it would be the same, but I've had servers be unresponsive/lock-up but still be pingable and look 'normal'. It all depends on the monitoring service you are using. This is one reason why its better to have monitors checking multiple services.

Just for curiosity sake, how often did you set the monitoring service to scan your server ?

eddy I have no idea..whatever it was when I signed up for the silver plan..It never gave me a option....But I am guessing if their service isnt down then my server is never considered down...

There are a lot of monitering services that may not report certain aspects of a server being down. i.e. a ping type of monitoring service won't let you know if php, mysql, etc is down but only if the server is reachable. Ping monitering is the only default monitering SM does unless you tell them otherwise and I'm not sure whether their ping is from inside or outside the network, but if it's only from the inside, then it may not be accurate.
This is why we use an outside monitering service in addition to SM's service. The outside service we use actually loads a php page to make sure the server is reachable and that php and mysql are working.

May I ask what you use as I am looking for a good monitoring script or company.

Oh, you are taking about the Silver Plan monitoring and not an external monitoring service. This does make sense.
The Silver Plan monitoring checks the present and only logs the present and thus it will show 100% uptime if it is up at the moment you check. It does not log past downtime. Of course if the downtime is prolonged, it could be logged only when it is down.
Incidentally, since the Silver Plan is SM's monitoring, it is testing internally and probably may be free from external attacks. I am not sure here though. It probably is sufficient to determine if the machine is up from within.

We've tried alertra.com and websitepulse.com . Both have slightly different options and trials for testing their service.
