Would it be possible to take out the video card of my server, because it wastes cpu usage? Or, if no would it be possible to put the worst graphics card in possible?
X-TremeGaming
Well you can't start a server without a video card. and I believe the rentals all have the 8mb cards so I'm not sure if it would make a difference or even if you could even find a smaller Vid card..

Zero how is an 8 MB Video card using CPU I have a 64 MB on my home PC here and it does nothing but play games icon_confused.gif

Actually the opposite is true. Having a more capable video card would mean lesser CPU usage since all of the video related processes are handled by the co-processor on the video card. That's what the video card and the 8mb ram is for.

If you have an old ISA card which is there just for display, most of the graphics related operations would be handled by the CPU itself and thus taxing it more.

That's why on game based machines, a faster and better Video card is essential as it would allocate more CPU resources to running the game while the video card handles all those complex 3D computation itself.
X-TremeGaming
Yes that is true but on a server you don't utilize the video card for anything but very minor display.

As far as gaming on a server... All my games run in the background as a service...

True but 8mb is probably the smallest you can get right now. But if it is one of those shared memory cards, you may be able to allocate less for the video card and more to the system.

I guess the only real time you need display is when they roll the monitor and keyboard to your server to do some maintenance. icon_wink.gif

Since the video cards are built into the motherboards of our superservers I'll need to get a chisel and hammer to remove it. We may need to charge for administrative time to get this out. icon_biggrin.gif

But seriously. I'd much prefer we keep the video ports enabled. If it all goes south and you need a console connected to your machine it will help out more than immensely.

Does the video card comes with its own memory or it uses a shared memory technology ? If it is shared, is it possible to lower the 8mb requirement to something lower and if so, how much lower ?

SuperCeleron here.

The SuperCeleron 1.7's mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-8LD533 board (specs), and I believe it uses shared video memory.

Ah! Thanks for the information. Now that I have the manual.. icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

The motherboard manual states that I could opt between 1mb or 8mb RAM for Video Memory. (Page 28) Since the server would not be used for anything beyond database and web sites, I doubt I need the 8mb video ram config. Is it possible to switch it down ? I am doing Windows 2003.

Another thing, it states that it uses a Socket 478 for Intel Micro FC-PGA2 pentium 4 processor and Pentium 4 (Northwood) processor 400Mhz FSB, it would mean that it is technically possible to upgrade the CPU from a Celeron 1.7 to a P4 2.0, right ?

And the RAM limit is set at 2gb Max.. so I guess it can go to that ?

Just wondering. Just weighing my future upgrade prospects.

If you want to lower your video RAM use please submit a ticket. icon_smile.gif

It's technically possible to put a p4 in there, but if you want to do that you'll need to get a SuperServer 2.0.

Actually, I wouldn't mind doing that. I did inquire about it from my Sales Rep but was told I cannot move the harddisk over and I would have to move the contents myself and I would supposed the IP addresses would change so that means more downtime and having to set things up all over again.

Thought that the fastest way would be to change the CPU and bill me as a SuperServer 2.0. I believe they are essentially the same hardware apart from the CPU and more IP allocation.

Or if it is technically possible to move the Harddisk over to the SuperServer 2.0 chasis and have it working. This way I would keep everything as it is.

The other option would be to keep it as it is since I am quite under-utilizing my server right now. icon_razz.gif

you dirty dog.. you said the celery word.

Does the SuperServer 2.8 P4 video card uses shared memory or is external card? I'm looking for a server that has external video card (not-shared memory). icon_smile.gif

Our SuperServers use shared video memory. When in doubt you can always upgrade your RAM. icon_biggrin.gif BTW: This is a super thread bump and I'm not sure how many of the 1.7's we have out there use that chipset posted above.

Im trying to host a Ghost Recon Game Server. GR requires the game to launch to host the server. The game wont launch because the graphics card is lame. Is there anyway to upgrade this? Or anyway to fix this so GR will run well enough to host a game on.

Every other game has software seperate from the game itself which we use to host our games but with GR it is tied into the game itself.

I know of other Dedicated Server Companies hosting GR, how are they able to do it and I cant? Where are they getting their servers that offer graphics cards that can handle the game itself?

Info anyone?
