I am in the process of ordering an additional Server. On this up coming server order I am thinking going for the Backup Service offered by ServerMatrix.
My question is, does the bandwidth from the server to the tape backup drive count towards the 1000GB Monthly Bandwidth? And if we start out with the minimal 20GB Monthly backup, how easy will it be to upgrade to like 40GB or higer packages, is it something where just log into the tape backup software and check your allocated backup directory size?
Thanks

SM offers two types of Backup. The NAS Backup and the tape backup. The one on the order form is the NAS Backup. Yes, I believe you can increase your requirement as and when you need and pay the difference.
Yes, since it is an external device and all traffic are monitored out of the network port, transfer to the NAS backup would be counted towards your bandwidth consumption. If you however use a tape backup then I believe that is attached directly to your server and will not count towards your bandwidth consumption.

To upgrade all you would have to do is open a ticket in Orbit with your request and we can get you set up.

okay,
since the one on the order form is a NAS backup then what would be the price difference of choosing the tape backup?
Thanks

Our Veritas backup starts at $49 a month with a $99 setup fee. This includes 10GB of space. Let us know if you have anymore questions.

One more quick question before I submit my request to our purchasing department. I want to get a quick opinion real quick.
1.) Will there be a noticeable difference between the SuperServer 2.4 and 2.8 Server's
2.) How would RHE be compared to FreeBSD?
thanks

Yes, the 2.8 has 1g of ram whereas the 2.4 has 512m. Of course, if you're not paging a lot on your 2.4 and RAM isn't your bottleneck, no, you won't notice much of a difference.

i'm sorry I meant in terms of CPU Speed, my current SuperServer 2.4 has 1GB of ram, i'm wanting to is their a seeable difference between a 2.4GHz cpu and a 2.8Ghz CPU. I pretty much know the answere but to keep the guys in the billing department happy, they have to see the answere in black in white (from a second source) before approval.
thanks.

There is probably a marginal increase in speed. Take a look at the Intel Comparison

Do you really need any functions on RH Ent which you cannot find in RH 9 ?
I think they did mentioned that the latest built of RH Ent 3 has problems with the latest build of Cpanel/WHM.

man I have really been slacking lately with researching on the latest redhat linux builds, if their are still bugs then I think i'll stick with what im comfortable with.

I guess Redhat Ent 3 is still new. Maybe you could write to sales and see what they say.

The problem is with the latest update to Redhat Enterprise. It is not compatible with cpanel. Redhat is currently working on a fix and has assured us that we will have it very soon. Hopefully by next week.

So does that mean the 2.8 server I just ordered earlier will be installed with Redhat 9 instead of RHE?
I had spoke with a tech and he said that I could order the 2.8 and just have them disable Hyper Threading until a fix was worked out, but I did not know it wasnt compatible with cpanel,
either way im still a happy camper

Yes, I just found out that they can install RHE on it. They will do it the way they told you.

Is cpanel and RHE 3.0 all working hunky dory?
Imago
Feb 20 2004, 06:14 AM
Except for some DNS-connected problems they go well together.
I've repeatedly got this message:
------------------------------------------------------
ndc: connect failed: connection refused
After updating the software and restarting the DNS server no more problems. Urchin doesn't seem to work under CPanel, though the guy is nonestly trying his best.

let's see, two reboot request within a 2hr span in one day, 1 reboot request the next with a possibility of having to downgrade the kernel, I have to get a real good chance to get things straight with this server. My Superserver 2.4 seems to be more stable than this box right now.

Doesn't server matrix do kernal upgrades/downgrades?
I just ordered a cpanel 2.4 with RHE 3, mainly because RHE 3 was recommended.
Im worried now lol.

Well after the reboot request 6AM this morning, I believe the tech said he was going to look into rebooting it and downgrading the kernel, I dont even know what the latest kernel version is, but so far the server has gone 6hrs and no problems as of yet. It even let me spend 2hrs doing moving a couple of accounts over and not locking, so my fingers are still crossed until I release my other 2.4 server.

I have pretty good knowledge in linux. I have worked with some servers.I would like to opt for a Super Celeron 1.7 GHz - 89 $ but if it's posible, I would like to make some remarks hoping that the price might be lower :
primary Hdd : 80 Gb it's too large and I do not need one larged than 40gb wich would be enough.
Bandwidth: 1000 GB Bandwidth it's too large for my need and I would like for start a bandwith of 300gb and with the posibility of upgrade in time.
I would like 64 Ip's for start (I plan on puting vhosts on them). I hope you can do this. I plan on making this deal bigger but that need time like any other thing in this world. I will await your reply. Thanks ""
eddy2099
Feb 23 2004, 05:25 PM
Well, the last time I asked for a customized deal like 2 x 40gb harddisk instead of 1 80gb but was given a flat 'No' so I am pretty sure part of the reason why your request was rejected is that they do not do custom deals if their current plans do not support it and especially it is to pay less then what they are asking for.
Also the other thing is 'shell accounts only' options are usually associated with IRC or other form of attacks. IRC bots which are pretty illegal here because of the level of DDoS attacks coming from the machine launched against other machines.
So if you are not planning to do that, you might want to explain to them what exactly is your legal purpose for offering just shell only accounts. You might want to be more explicit as to the purpose, how they would be used and how you will ensure that no one would turn the table and use it for the purpose of abuse.. so mentioning your checks and measures would definitely be a plus.
Anyone can claim their are experts in Linux since it is just words, you need to show your knowledge and that is what counts.

it could be the 64 ip's they are not happy about - you do not need that many ip's for virtual hosts. 1 ip will take all the virtual hosts you can put on it.
