Full Version: Yum or Up2Date?

Hello,

I have just ordered a system reimaging with the latest Plesk version. I wanted to ask one thing - which is the best way to keep the system updated? Should I use up2date or ART's yum repository?

How do you do it?
NightStorm
Since ART no longer maintains an OS distro, you'll want to use a combination of his yum distro for the Plesk stuff, and up2date for the system software.

Use up2date. You can incorporate ART's repos into your up2date configuration. I think he even has instructions on how to do that on his site.

Oh, and make sure you exclude some things from up2date to keep from breaking your server. There's a thread or two around around here somewhere detailing what you need to exclude for PSA.

Thanks a lot for the great help, guess you saved me! I will find the threads you mentioned icon_smile.gif

Found the list of packages to be excluded at SwSoft KB.

pkgSkipList='kernel*','psa-*','sendmail',' bind-chroot','caching-nameserver';

But I was wondering - why kernel is kept out? Shouldn't we run always the most up to date kernel on a server to protect ourselves?

You usually do not because when the server reboots it may not come back correctly - better to update it and know it may have trouble then to forget it and have a lot of problems getting it up.

Makes perfect sense, thanks.
