Hi.
First I’m new to this forum so… “Hi, Guys”.

Okay I’m in need of some help and was wondering if you kind people could help.
I’ve got a dedicated win 2003 server running Plesk.

The problem is this…
We have a number of freelancers working for us, and we need to set them up each with a FTP account, then when they start working on a project we need to be able to give them permissions for that site, then once they have finished we can simply remove the permissions.

After a lot of playing, I’m unable to work out how to do this using IIS and MS FTP server.

Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Again thanks for your help!!!

Cheers

Hi,

What control panel does your server have? Setting up FTP for the developers can be done, but if its plesk, its a bit difficult.

Hello Jason,

In plesk you can make use of web-users to provide ftp access to the developers. In control panel go into the domain an click on web users, add the user with a password. This provides FTP as well as http access to the users. For example if I were to add a web user called jase, then he would have http available as http://mydomain.com/jase and he would have ftp access limited only to him folder jase on the server and not to the whole of the actual website.

If you need to provide ftp access to the main website area itself, its a different story and needs a lil bit of hack into the fto links to get your user through to the real area. This is very much possible, but if you need to do on your own, it would be better to go with the idea of web-users

Hello Jason,

I almost missed your requirement for providing the developers access to multiple websites. This is certainly not possible through the web-users as web-users would be limited to inidvisual domains. This will need to be done through ftp link modification and a lil bit of hack as i mentioned earlier. Plesk operates ms-ftp using synlinking mechanism and this is where work will need to be carried out.

Another method involves using a third party ftp server software such as serv-u or ws_ftp or filezilla ftp server to run on a non-standard port such as 2121 (so that it does not disturb the existing ms-ftp and plesk), create users on this server and set access to the folders/websites you need. In this method, there is no need to touch the permissions of the website folders concerned at all. If you need help on carrying any of these out, you can message me.
