Hello,

I just purchased a new VPS server, and I'm wondering how to do upgrades and such. I've tried up2date, and its asking me to register with the RHN. Yum isn't installed.

Also, I'm not sure which updates may break Plesk. I come from doing Ensim dedicated servers on RHEL, and with that I know that there are many upgrades that can break panel systems. I believe I've read that the kernel is not updatable on a VPS system. I really like running my own utilities that don't come with this package, like an APF+BFD firewall setup, and I'm curious if there is a list somewhere that lays out all of the packages that shouldn't be upgraded, editted, or removed.

Also, I hear you can do Plesk upgrades via its control panel. I can't seem to find an upgrade link in mine. Currently running 7.5.4. So far, I really like the look of the package, but I can't even get an html file to display correctly via a single domain because of permissions. I have a lot of changes to get used to. In the mean time, I'd like to harden my system and ensure I won't get hacked half way through setting my sites up.

All help is appreciated with up2date, plesk updates, and general plesk VPS specific hardening information. TIA

I am in the same boat. I got a VPS with plesk 7.5.4 and I need to do plenty of upgrading right out of the box. I downloaded the necesarry RPM for uprading mysql but managed to break plesk and now nothing works.

Ok, so technical support is pointing me to buy a server restoration but I got no answer as far as upgrades and how do I do it?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks,

most packages are okay no days, but you can still search the forums here for skiplists. just put in a ticket with ev1 to get up2date registered, and as for plesk updates its in the plesk updater in the plesk control panel. if its not there you will want to install the rpm for that psa package.

Yeah, got my up2date registered, then proceeded to do an up2date. Everything worked fine, except that I got an error about a dummy file dependancy, and couldn't upgrade glibc. I need an upgraded glibc to run one of my own daemons. I've looked up the file in question, and Google is returning 0 results.

So, I moved on, started following a tutorial on here to upgrade PHP and MySQL via yum. big mistake, crashed the server. So, I went into the Virtuozzo panel to restore the server. Another big mistake, screwed up my license which went from 30 domains down to 1 domain. Went to reinstall my sites and hit a big license brick wall. Not sure why it didn't restore correctly.

Also, Plesk for VPS can't auto-update. I used the autoinstaller in CLI, and said no way.

I currently have a TT in to reimage my VPS and redo the up2date registration. Was in the process of cancelling a dedicated server, but now I'm without email to confirm, so there's another TT to change to a non-EV1 email.

Not exactly how I wanted to spend my Memorial Day. icon_sad.gif

I got all of my trouble tickets filled and I'm back in business now. Excellent work for a holiday. Thanks EV1!

Now, to figure out Glibc... after a full backup, of course. icon_wink.gif

The idea with Virtuozzo is NOT to use up2date or yum but stick with SWsoft's vzup2date. This tool is run on the physical server and automatically updates the software on the virtual servers (VE's).

By using up2date/yum you risk breaking the update functionality of vzup2date and - assuming EV1 actually update their Virtuozzo servers - corrupt your VE when they update the server.

It also means you will use a lot of disk space for the software that otherwise is saved by using shared code.
