I got a VPS account yesterday, and noticed neiter up2date nor yum was installed on my account. So I went to irc.ev1.net to ask someone, Vincent on the chat said, since my VPS account was new it required be registered with RHN, understandble So he asked me to create ta ticket about it which I did. This is the response I got back:

"Unfortunately at this time we are not able to provide up2date for your VPS server. We are working closely with our vendor Plesk to remedy this problem, but at this time have no resolution. In time we hope to be able to provide the necessary entitlements and packages for up2date; however at this time we are unable to fulfill your request....."

Reading other threads on this forum verifies that other users with VPS are able to use up2date and yum. My kernel is out of date, most packages installed are out of date, there is no gcc installed so I can't build anything.

I am assuming this person who responed my ticket is just not well informed or something.. Otherwise this is a bad start with ev1 for me..

please let me know if you have any knowledge on this matter.

I don't know about the up2date/yum but with a VPS you cannot upgrade the kernel so you are stuck with whatever version they install. Most likely it is the latest version plesk has they are just really slow to release updates at time. They also do not keep up with the "normal" numbering scheme.

I don't know if it will work but you could try to wget and rpm -Uvh a yum rpm, I would imagine that should work. Depending on if it is redhat or centos you may be able to also just get an up2date rpm. That being said if ev1 is saying they cannot technically something else may be going on..... no clue

thanks for the reply eth00,

my VPS is running redhat-as3, is there location where I can download RPM packages for redhat-as3?

thanks again.

the problem is that RHE AS, does not come with up2date, and our license for up2date entitlements does not allow us to register it on RHE AS servers. in the end, go for RHE ES, or do the updates manually using rpm, a good source of rpms is rpmfind.net.
