Full Version: installing mysql 5 separately

I currently only have MySQL 3.23 on my Plesk 7 box. I need MySQL 5, but for development purposes only. I am thinking it makes more sense to install MySQL 5 separately rather than trying to upgrade the current version and risk breaking Plesk. Would you guys agree? Also, is there anything I need to watch out for? I don't want to accidently write over anything.

Thanks for any input!

good idea marky, there's no reason to upgrade that which doesn't need it, as it could possibly introduce bugs/break etc.

See if you can avoid developing on the server at all. I have a 300mhz machine here onsite that the web development team use. If you have a bunch of developers in a central location it would be quicker and easier to have a local box available for them to use. If it breaks, then who cares? icon_smile.gif

If you do install mysql 5 on the server, there are a few options, such as creating a user mode system and running in that, or adding a user such as mysqldev and installing mysql in the home directory. remember to secure the port that you choose.
