Full Version: Log processing, et al?

At 4am some processes launch on my server that bring the load level way up and the CPU takes a big hit. These processes run pretty much until 8am. During that whole time I get multiple alerts from SIM How can I tell if the server CPU is too low powered or if too much is being processed, or if I have logs that should be retiring but aren't?

I am contemplating upgrading my CPU but I want to make sure that the reason for doing that will actually be what is needed. I never use up my bandwidth on the server and my disk space is fine. I am concerned about these spikes I see in the 4am processing and what is causing it and if there is some other solution other than upgrading the CPU.

Thanks,

Take a look in cron and let us know what logs are being processed at that time.

There are commands to give individual processes less priority which may solve your problems.

I hate to be so ignorant, but I don't even know where to look for the crons... I will try and research them and find out.

Thanks!

I may not have ran crontab from the right place, but this is all I got:

# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE - edit the master and reinstall.
# (/nh/crontab installed on Sun May 23 01:37:27 2004)
# (Cron version -- $Id: crontab.c,v 2.13 1994/01/17 03:20:37 vixie Exp $)
01 * * * * /usr/local/etc/logcheck.sh

That seems to me that all it is doing is processing log files...if that is all it is doing at 4am then that makes me wonder if the log files haven't gotten too big and what can be done about that? I saw something about logrotate but then does that mean you lose statistics if you cycle logs?

Thanks and pardon my ignorance!
