Full Version: Urchin 5.x vs. Google Analytics

Do people feel Google Analytics is vastly superior to the stats generated by Urchin 5.x?
web1
No, and it just pisses off your users because it slows down your sites.

Why the hell do people even consider this?

Do you like it when you go to a site and it loads 5 ads all from other servers? Is it fun on the world wide wait?

Not at all, although now that Urchin is Google, I hope they don't crap it up with adwords, etc. rolleyes.gif

Hum personally I have to admit Google Analytics looks pretty niiiiiiice with its interactive flash graphs... But sure serverside is much better then external scripts that has to be loaded, but I wouldn't mind having the Google Analytics version serverside icon_wink.gif Do I hear HeadSurfer dialing 1-800-GOOGLE? icon_biggrin.gif

Well this is certainly a fine mess we're in now.

Just got a new cPanel server and was about to install Urchin.

Click the download link in the support email for installing Urchin fro EV1 and low and behold a crappy Google page.

After years of providing my clients a perfectly good stats solution I'm now at square one, looking for a new stats package.

I don't trust Google sonce they started rigging their search result rankings.

I sure wouldn't download any Google software to install on my server

What will EV1 be offering now for a stats package???????

What stats software are others installing on their new EV1 servers?
Hedges
Yes...I'm in a bit of a pickle over this situation with Urchin. My clients are accustomed to having Urchin. I recently moved one to a new server. When I attempted to install Urchin, I find it's no longer available.

EV1...can you chime in here? What is your position on Urchin? Do you have a download of the pre-google version of Urchin we can use?

Thanks for your support!
Hedges
I received an email from Ev1 customer support providing me with a pointer to the Urchin download.

Thanks Ev1!

I couldn't agree more.
Ditto. What's the scoop?

Hi Reb!

No word yet from EV1.

They are in negotiations.

They don't have a timeline on an answer.

In the mean time I found a copy of Urchin 5 and have it working.

I'll be looking for a replacement in case they de-activate it or some crazy thing like Google is prone to do rolleyes.gif

If you can't download Urchin, I've mirrored the latest copy I used for RHE3, on our site here:

File: urchin5703_redhat_ent3.tar.gz
URL: http://www.sendover.com/HRFE-LM-8KYA

(Yes -- it's full of ads, and rate-limited down to about 10K/sec. Feel free to mirror it somewhere better once you have it! icon_wink.gif )

And, since it's worthless without the license key from EV1, I assume/hope it's legal to post...

*EDIT* The link below by pulsar is the EV1 source -- I'd use that one!

Ev1servers have it here: http://www.ev1servers.net/support/urchin/index.asp for download (see at the bottom of the page for links to download).

Although I think it's great that they still offer Urchin, I'm of the opinion that the Flash presentation of Google's version of Urchin is fancy and probably would dazzle customers more... more dazzle more sold... at least to some extent.

Urching from EV1 is more for basic analysis of logs. Useful for bandwidth counting and even seeing which pages are the most popular.

Google Analytics is like Urchinn 6, which used to cost over $200 a month! It has many great features that can help you improve your business and lower your TCO (Yay! More "BS" marketing terms.)

I've started playing with it and I like it a lot. I'm using it to collect data about visitors on my forum and even implemented a technique for tracking how many guest register at my forum! It gives me a great perpective and view about what improvements I should do next.

Lastly, it's hosted for you! You don't need to debug, update nor be afraid at night! It's running off the super Google cluster and is managed by profesional system administrators.

And your users have to put up with the wait with every page load and if google's routers or your visitor's ISP routers have problems getting to the google server their wait is even longer.

Then users will start blocking google analytics because it's slowing them down and you won't get any stats for those visitors.

Please think about the visitors to your site and stop thinking about how great it is for YOU.

And don't forget, it will be YOU who gets slowed down when you are trying to visit other people's sites if everyone starts using this!

I am so screwed. I absolutely loathe flash (or any moving thingies on my screen). I don't have it installed. Don't want to install it. What will I do for stats?

How is Google ripping you off? You can choose not to sign-up.

By employing "bait and swithch tactics" referred to in the posted article and by rigging their rankings in order to coerce commercial sites into subscribing to their pay-per-click scam.

Well, I'm not the only one who thinks its kinda weird. I hate the idea of having some 3rd party script running on any website even if it is Google. Is it really that far off from spyware? How much information can Google Analytics gather?

After looking around for a long time I was finally able to find the download section for Urchin 5 within the google monstrosity.

Thought I would share this with you guys.

We hate the way Google is slowly sucking up all the small independent It businesses. Google is becoming like every other monopolistic behemoth. They really need to re-assess their moniker of 'don't be evil' or whatever they trumpeted when they were actually an innovative business. Their pursuit to plaster their Google Adwords over every single web page is enough to make you start using MSN search!

Anyway.... hares a little tweak that you might like to make to your installed copy of Urchin.

You'll notice that if the user attempts to view their report using the Adobe SVG plug-in, the link will redirect to Google’s site if it is not installed on their browser. Your user will then be told how they will have to wait for an invite. - Great service Google! They’ll also ponder why they’re viewing a Google site when they thought they were being offered a service from your company.

Anyway, to fix this just edit 'svgcheck.js' file located in 'C:Program FilesUrchinhtdocsujs' (windows default install).

Change line 46 from;

var svgInstallPage="http://www.urchin.com/support/svg/index.cgi";

to...

var svgInstallPage="http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/";

Save and restart the Urchin services.

Users will now be redirected to the Adobe SVG download page. A small but useful tweak.

I hope that Google is able to add the functionality to see your stats by IPlocation. I know they have the technology to map IP addresses to locations. They do it for Adwords region specific ads targeting.

I work for a comedian and we want to know what the hottest areas are by reagion, and thus what locations hit our site the most. So a stats program that can show this would be awesome for us. (Maybe Urchin already has this and I haven't seen it in my install?)

There are some great free projects that are mapping IP addresses to locations and giving away the info for free. (i.e. www.hostip.info). I highly encourage all servermasters and webmasters to promote these type of sites on their websites, so the tracking capabilities can grow.

I go to www.hostip.info from every computer I touch and enter the region information about the IP address.
