Full Version: Why is setting up a SubDomain so difficult? Or is it just me?

Man, this Forum is really rocking eh? I wonder if anyone will actually see this post?

Oh well, here goes. Why is it I cannot find instructions on setting up a subdomain (http://hostedsite.mydomain.com/)? I've searched these Forums, searched the Plesk Forums, and all I can find is when someone asks the same question I am asking, others show up to ask them why they want to do this and then try to talk them out of it. Or at the very best they say "You set up subdomains just like a regular domain". Hehehe.

Please, can someone just tell me how to do it? I would really, really appreciate it.

You simply setup a subdomain as you would for any other domain....

e.g. Add Domain sub.domain.com as a new domain in Plesk

However this does count towards a domain under the Plesk license

Well, I was close. icon_wink.gif See what I mean?
But seriuously, it's just not working, it's not displaying in my browser. I'm guessing there is some weird DNS settings or something to make the subdomain actually display. I have my site, one domain, and I want to host a friends site as a subdomain. These should both go on the same IP address right?

The DNS is added to your domain automatically assuming you have your own nameservers. However DNS is not an instant thing... you may have to wait for them to update before you can see your sub domain

I don't have my own nameserver, I'm still using RackShack. This subdomain is not a paying customer, it's a site of my friends that I want to host. I want to set up his own area for FTP access, and since Plesk does not allow that in the http://www.mydomain.com/hostedsite/ format I am trying to set up a http://hostedsite.mydomain.com/ subdirectory. Thanks for your input Rich2k, hopefully you can give me some advice on how to do this as apparntly it is not the same as setting up a new virtual host.

If you have the account setup in plesk as yourfriend.yourdomain.com
then all you need to do is login to your Members are at ww.rackshack.net
click on DNS Configuration
click on Click Here to Add a Domain to DNS
click on Click Here to Transfer a Sub Domain
replace sub with yourfriend
replace ofmydomain.com with your domain
Select Your IP: select the ip of your box:)
Then wait till it propagates
