Ciao folks!

Enjoying my purchase of a RHEL3 server from ev1servers and everything is hunky-dory but I have a question or two I hope someone can shed some light on.

Just taking a look at the last logins ("last > logins.log" in shell) I've noticed a few odd entries logging in successfully as root:

root mozart.ev1servers.net Jul 8th 17:41 - 17:43
admin candc Jul 7th 15:45 - 15:45 (day server was purchased)

I presume they're part of some system from ev1servers, would there be a problem if I changed the root and admin (the only shell account) passwords?

I also spoke for a good hour on the phone with a tech support guy who, polite as he was, did not have a clue about how to access the remote console service for my server (ya know, the one that supposedly plugs into the serial port that you can access even if your server has stopped any network traffic). I telnet to the IP given in the ev1 log-in area, at port 22, using ES-xxxxxxx:70xx and my password, and I get this box telling me that ttyS0 is running, and then PuTTY closes the window "connection closed by foreign host". Anyone else experienced this?

Muchos gracias,

Fergus

You should definitelly change those passwords.
In fact, it is very recommended that you disable direct root login.
You can find directions on how to do that at http://forum.ev1servers.net/showthread.php...able+root+login

As far as the remote consol, you should open a support ticket with EV1 and have them take a look.

Thanks EWD,

Direct root login disabled (and ssh is now on a different port) - it was all on my to-do list somewhere icon_biggrin.gif

I tried the remote console again, and noticed that the log-in password given in the log-in area had all the upper-case letters in my password in lower-case. Will tell ev1 this for future reference. I've got it working now.

Cheers,

Fergus
