After installing a renewed SSL certificate, isn't the date of the certificate supposed to automatically update to reflect the new lease?

I updated 2 certificates, but noticed that when viewing the certificates from the browser, the dates are still that of the old certificates. Is this normal, or is something wrong?

I updated the certificates through cPanel's SSL Manager.

You have to restart Apache.

That makes sense, thanks for your reply.

I rebooted the server, and consequently Apache. That didn't change anything, but it may have been because I set up the new certificates for domain.com, as opposed to what they were previously set up as, www.domain.com. I changed the paths in my osCommerce site to reflect the new certificates, but I'm still getting the old dates when I view the certificates from the browser.

Is it possible that when the old certificate expires, it will automatically switch over to the renewed certificate? I've checked the new certificate from cPanel and it appears valid, and I don't get any funny messages when I try browsing to https://domain.com, even though the current certificate dates are for https://www.domain.com.
