I am wondering, is this the correct way to set up a nameserver?

67.15.xxx.xxx / 24 PTR mysite.com. (ip for shared hosting)
mysite.com. A 67.15.xxx.xxx (ip for shared hosting)
mysite.com. MX (10) mail.mysite.com.
mysite.com. NS ns1.mysite.com.
mysite.com. NS ns2.mysite.com.
ftp.mysite.com. CNAME mysite.com.
mail.mysite.com. A 67.15.xxx.xxx
ns1.mysite.com. A 67.15.xxx.xx7 (ip for ns1)
ns2.mysite.com. A 67.15.xxx.xx8 (ip for ns2)
webmail.mysite.com. A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ip for shared hosting)
www.mysite.com. CNAME mysite.com.

The reason I ask is because I have given it a couple of days, and cannot ping ns1.mysite.com, but I can ping the ip associated.

I went through the howto's by ladyhawk but I'm not sure I have it 100%

Thanks,

Russ

You may want to run your domain through
www.dnsreport.com
and see what it kicks back.

You may have an issue where your servers are not answering authoratively -- as a result, dns propagation would fail.

Thanks huck. Part of my problem is that I was trying to use 2 of the IP's initially assigned with my server. Come to find out, ev1 has to specifically assign you an ip for that use.

Also looks like they will not give them out for a VPS. (when I went to request, I had no IP's listed to choose from as my master) and it also says they are not normally given to virtual sites. (I assume this covers VPS)

I am upgraded to a full blown server in a couple of weeks anyway, so I'll mess with it again then. I appreciate your help!

Actually, a VPS comes with 4 IPs (inluding your primary) by default, and you can use them as you see fit. You cannot get any additional IPs, though.

A couple of things to check on Russ...

First, make sure you have the ns1 and ns2 addresses set up correctly through your Registrar, whoever that is.

Second, in the EV1 members area go to the "DNS Configuration" area and choose the link for "Edit reverse pointers for your IP's" to make sure each of the three is pointing correctly. The main server IP should be going to hostname.yoursite.com, whatever the hostname of your server is. The IP's for the ns's should simply be pointing to ns1.yoursite.com and ns2.yoursite.com in order to make them all authoritative.

Squire,

Thanks much! I think I have it. I am now able to ping the ns's. I had to set up A records for them, and then do the reverse pointers. It all seemed to propogate very fast once that was done.
