Hi, it possible to connect two racks with a 100mbps cord?
eth00
I believe they do not usually offer this but I would contact isabel because they may be able to work something special out. She is amazing for getting special things setup for people.

Namaste -

Yes this is commonly done.

thanks for the clarifications.

Another question: when one outgrows a partial rack and wants to extend to a full rack, how does EV1 handle that? Are the boxes physically shifted to the new rack? If so what is the usual downtime?
AaronC
That depends. If the other shelves on that rack are free, we may be able to expand your partial rack into a full private rack with very minimal downtime, if there is any at all.

If we have to move you to a new rack, there may be up to a few hours of downtime (depending on what type of rack hardware you have.... load balancers, storage servers, etc.) as we move your servers over. This is something on which we can work with you to ensure the smallest impact to your services.

Thanks.

I am currently looking to consolidate 5 of my servers on a partial rack, primarily because of the cable speed (100mbps vs 10mbps). However, I understand that 2 of the servers are in a seperate data centre. What then happens?

a. The servers are shifted ?

b. I order new servers in the primary data centre, transfer everything there, and then discontinue the 2 old server?

Also, if I shift a load balanced cluster to a rack, does this take up 2 slots or three?

I can answer this one icon_smile.gif

b. and our guys will work with you until you have migrated everything over icon_wink.gif

Having 2 servers load balanced on a shelf or rack will take up 2 spaces. The load balancer itself does not count towards the 5 server limit of a shelf.

However, please start a dialogue with custom.orders@ev1servers.net.

They are the team that can answer any of the questions you might have on this process, and they can help schedule this with you.
Namaste
thanks, will do. Good thread, clearing many questions on Private Racks.

Could you guys put half size boxes on a shelf, then fit 10 on instead of 5? That would be great. lol icon_smile.gif

If Blade Servers weren't so darn expensive I would say use them instead.

Or, even better, racks.

But yes, they're very expensive and aren't cost efficient.

As a matter of fact, I have some servers hosted at NYC and we use blades there because of the limitations of space.

depending on whose blade chassis you use can limit the blade count. I have seen a 3 U blade chassis that holds 21 blades.

Compared to 3 - 1u servers in the same space.. big difference.

and after reading this.. Blades make better sense
http://www.theregister.com/2005/08/10/hp_r..._redhat_bundle/

yes the ROI for the hosting company is not as good as a white box or name brand tower.. but honestly... if someone is getting a blade chassis, they either have too much money and have no clue (you still take their money citing "learning experience") or they know what they are doing so you let em do the voodoo they do so well.

Thing is that if they know what they are doing and set up a nice server cluster, and get it all smooze.. do you think they will want to move it someplace else after that? The only reasons people move are A) price and B) service. Closing up shop is not a move but rather tossing in the towel

Ev1 has good prices.. tough to beat for the quality of Datacenter you get
Ev1 has good CS... sometimes it slips but hey, the last guy that was "perfect" got nailed to a cross. (religious humor mode ON) so if they slip up once in a while, fine, just correct the slip up and enlighten the person who did said slip up so they won't do it again.

At work we have a slogan:
"You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself." - Sam Levenson

words all techs should live by. Ev1 should have an internal database for their customers.. if problem A) happens and the fix is _____ then that should be put into a knowledge base for the techs.. might save time and help the techs.
