I don't know what has changed, but I can no longer search. I normally connect and go straight for 'View New Posts', but it just times out when I try - really quite annoying.

Hm, it works ok for me. Maybe try to log out (remove your cookie) and log in again.

Whoops! Yes, I just saw it seems the forum has been crashed and a backup restored. See: http://forum.rackshack.net/showthread.php?...=&threadid=5582

Talk about a time warp!

It's only two weeks of posts, but I feel bad that RackShack lost all the really good how-to's, advice, and answers that people came up with during that time.

Yes, major ouchies. The great discussions about PHP and CGI security on Ensim are toast.

Talk about a major Hoover.

I happend to have a hard copy of it (I printed the thread out) and have rewritten the essentials of it on my ensimpkg page (which I think it relates to) ... http://WebScorpion.com/ensim/ensimpkg.html

Well that's good at least.

The strange thing is that I had this feeling last night where I almost went through and archieved all the threads I've found really helpful just to have them all in one place (because while I've made notes on the actual changes I've made, I don't have the full discussions which in many cases were very helpful). But then I thought to myself - nah, if I need them again I'll just do a search on the forums and I didn't do it icon_sad.gif

You know...

If everyone running MSIE would look in their CACHE directory, we probably could reconstruct a great part of the threads that are now atoms flowing around the vast reaches of cyberspace... icon_wink.gif

In IE, click on (top menu)

Tools -- Internet Options -- Settings

and then look under "Temporary Internet files folder" for the path to where IE is storing the cached copies of all the stuff it d/l's off the Net...

Browse that folder, and then look for "Showthread"... you'll probably have quite a few of these... maybe a few zillion, in fact!

Many of the lost threads are likely "in there"... but...

Problem is that you'll have to view each one to see what the heck it is... and to find the lost thread of RackShack

Ooops... left out the important part... icon_wink.gif

To view the cached ver. (instead of the live version, which no longer exists) you have to change set IE to "Never", under it's "Check for newer versions of stored pages" settings ( Tools -- Internet Options -- Settings )

I think you'll find all VBulletin pages have PRAGMA-NOCACHE icon_razz.gif

See my last post... the attempts to do a "no-cache" doesn't work very well with IE (which has a mind of its own!) icon_wink.gif

Five quick examples of stuff pulled out of IE's cache...

can be viewed here...

nothing of interest in my history icon_wink.gif I tried archive.org but as you can see it's not really recent evbough icon_razz.gif

links on that page will get some info...

Was WebHostingTalk db's on this server also?, because it's all a mess over there too.

Hey that's great -- I just copied 137 threads from there and will go through them when I get back from the day's errands. Windows makes this a pain in the *ss because the file names come out the same even though they're different threads, but I think I managed to copy them out of there intact.

Other than having needed a myisamchk run, WHT seems to be ok.

Ok, seams to be working now. But it has been (still is) real slooow for me the last few days, it takes several minutes to load a thread.

And it shouldn't have anything to do with my connection, got a 2MB/2MB line and everything else including RS is speedy as normal.
Ric
I don't know what is more depressing, losing 60+ posts or losing the great information I had bookmarked. I do have some threads saved but I don't know how they could be reposted with any clarity.

Lost a good chunck of bookmarked threads as well as 300 or so posts.. bleah.. just glad its on a more stable server now.. Mouse

A very good incentive to implement a good backup procedure eh? Now... Where was that backup thread using rsync, oh yeah, its gone too!

Well, although I'm also quite disappointed that so many great threads were lost, one positive note is that it just goes to show you how great all the people here are, since all those threads I miss were put together in only a couple of weeks.

This really is a nice commmunity with a *lot* of very talented folks.

Provided there is a better backup procedure in place from this point forward, we'll be back on track in a couple more weeks and probably even better than before. And now I realize how much of a resource the forums really are seeing how much information was provided in just those two missing weeks and in any two week timeframe.

What I viewed on RackShack Forum from internet explorer cashe
(Windows NT)
Zipped files in rsforumviewed.zip
from 4/18/02 to 5/10/02
size zipped 673 KB
size unzipped 3.91 MB
all end in .htm
file count 106

example files showthread[1]a.htm showthread[1]b.htm
I renamed files to include a or b or c ... for different cashe directories on my drive.

I don't know if there is anything good in these files, I have not checked.

I only had a few threads saved with posts newer than 4-17-02. For what its worth... Up for a week or two.

RackShack Talk - Plesk Spam Reduction HOW TO.htm

RackShack Talk - plesk 2_0 backup.htm

RackShack Talk - CHKROOTKIT HOWTO install.htm
