Full Version: up2date ignoring packages?

Hello all,

I've just run up2date and it upgraded a couple of packages. In the past i've added a lot of packages to the list up2date needs to ignore. I'm now to the point that i don't know if it is still wise to let up2date ignore certain packages.

Can somebody advice me if it is still oke to ignore the following packages:

This depends on your Control panel. For a plain redhat server, you can update any RPMS that do not interfere with 3rd party software programs.

Certainly the Kernel and spamassassin (SA) should be updated. Certain versions of SA have a bug that causes 100% cpu usage. You can get SA 3.x from Dag Weirs RPM archives.

Note if you update caching nameserver it may overwrite /etc/named.conf so make a backup of that file first.

Thanks for the usefull reply. I'm currently using plesk, it was installed as a default. The rpm* skips were because of plesk.

But i don't know about the kernel* ones, to my knowledge these are skipped by the default configuration of up2date (when i entered the server for the first time the kernel* was on the skip list). Should i remove the kernel from the skip and update the kernel?

I'm going to do some reading about kernel as soon as possible.

Moved thread to Plesk General Support. You may get better hits on your topic over here.

With a kernel, you can do the kernel upgrade with up2date, just make sure you have it set to install and not upgrade.

I just have up2date download the kernel and then I rpm -ivh it manually to make sure all is as I expect. Then I manually edit and run lilo to make sure all is happy.
