Full Version: Plesk DNS "named" process takes 24% CPU

On my Windows 2003 Web edtion, there is always a process "named.exe" takes about 24% or more CPU time on the process monitor. After searched this file name, it's a file "named.exe" located in C:Program FilesSWsoftPleskdnsbinnamed.exe

Is this normal? This is a Dual Xeon, upon boot up, without much web traffic, the CPU is almost alwasy 50% up, mostly attribute to this process. Is it the Plesk DNS server? Quit expensive DNS server then.

Well one thing is you could be allowing recursive lookups which would allow anyone to use your server to do lookups. named.exe takes up little to no cpu usage on my windows server.

Who should I contact to disable this "allow anyone to use your server to do lookups"? The "named.exe" takes up about 20% - 30% of my CPU time, though sometimes shows up sometime desn't. This is a high traffic web server, named.exe really push the CPU to 90% most of time.

What I don't understand is, why is this process (DNS bind) necessary for domain name resolving? Is there dedicate DNS server who does this? ns1.ev1servers.net, or DNS server at my domain register all can do this, correct? If I run a Windows XP desktop, and host a personal web server, is there such a process (bind) running too to resolve domain name? This is not clear to me.

Is "named.exe" a program come with Plesk? Related to Plesk's resolving multiple domain names to a single IP address (Apache style)?

This thread mentioned the problem is related to hyperthreading. I wonder if hyperthreading can be turned off? The server is already a Dual Xeon, why turn on hyperthreading anyway?

named.exe is a dns server.
If you have your own dns servers and dont use ev1s you need it to run your sites.

No, in case of your computer you setup in your network settings probably the ones of your isp.

If I understand correct, as long as I have my own DNS server (in my case, my domain register has provided a free one, which is where I stored the domain information and A record IP address to this server), then I shouldn't need this named.exe running on my server, right?

If I have to use it unless I use ns1.ev1servers.net instead of my domain register's DNS server, I can choose to use ns1.ev1server.net, though it's a bit slow to propogate IP changes, but anything I can do to get rid of named.exe.

I mean it doesn't have anything to do with the multiple domain resolved to a single IP (Plesk/apache), right?

Is Microsoft DNS installed and running? This can create a conflict resulting in high CPU usage.

No Microsoft Windows' DNS installed. This is a Plesk for windows hosting. I've installed any addtional network software.
