After logging into control panel, and clicking on preview, I get the default plesk page and not the homepage, even after having uploaded an index.html page.

I tried setting the domain name and IP in the "hosts" file. But it didn't work.

I'll be happy for any suggestions ?

Check to make sure there's not also an index.htm file at the root level.

If memory serves the default templates produce a file by that name and apache will look for it first.
