Anyone got any ideas on how to do this?

I've updated kernels on FreeBSD since the dawn of time, but I made my config file, built it the "new" way as per the Handbook, went to back up my old kernel and....

root@mithrandir:/boot$ ls -l
total 376
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 512 Oct 27 2003 boot0
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 512 Oct 27 2003 boot1
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 7680 Oct 27 2003 boot2
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 1136 Oct 27 2003 cdboot
drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Nov 27 13:04 defaults
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 155648 Oct 27 2003 loader
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 9237 Oct 27 2003 loader.4th
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 67 Nov 27 13:07 loader.conf
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 11969 Oct 27 2003 loader.help
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 338 Oct 27 2003 loader.rc
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 512 Oct 27 2003 mbr
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 157696 Oct 27 2003 pxeboot
-r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 25121 Oct 27 2003 support.4th

... where's the OLD kernel so I can back it up!? Anyone have a clue how EV1 are handling this and if I have to do anything freakish to install my own kernel?

What version freebsd are you using?

bin             home            modules.old     razor-agent.log usr

That is on a 4.11 box.

You can find your kernel in the following location in 5.x

/boot/kernel/kernel
gloomy
I guess if it is 4.x then you should find something like /kernel.GENERIC
on 5.x bos you should have /kernel/kernel.old/ folder with your old kernel.

If that doesnt help i suggest just fecth your preffered kernel sources and rebuild it.

Ahhh.. I am getting confused between my 4.9 EV1 box and my home 5.3 box.

The kernel is there and I am happy now icon_smile.gif
