Full Version: Trying to start Virtual Nameserver (ns2)

Greetings:

This is my first Windows box. I've been using linux up to now. Got it for personal stuff/video serving in a transit hobby area. This is a Windows 2003 Standard w/Ensim Pro 3.6.

Right off the bat, setting up network connections gave me strange problems, because you have to use a FQDN for the host name. So after a few tries, I settled on ns1.domain.com. Well, now I get exotic records in zones, like mail.ns1.domain.com, and ns2.ns1.domain.com, and so on. Real suspicious.

The only help I could find on Ensim's site for running a Virtual Server advises to add a line in named.conf for "listen-on..." which I have added, and restarted the server.

Despite checking zone records, and so on, dnsreport.com always says my ns2.domain.com nameserever is not running.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or has anyone run into something similar?

I really suspect that host name, for openers. Also, I'm beginning to wonder if Windows is running a DNS service of some kind that is conflicting with Ensim's ISC BIND, but being the Win2003 newbie that I am, I don't know what to look for.

FWIW, a name based domain at an external registrar, set up for ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com resolves correctly. That is, without putting some wierd thing like ns2.ns1.domain.com...

Any thoughts would surely be appreciated.

Thanks,
Norm
