Full Version: using a 2nd disk for domain data

I have already tackled this issue with Ensim in this thread but has anyone found an easier way in Plesk to use a server's second disk drive to give more room to my user's sites? Maybe even a raid 0 solution?

cheers,
Luke

Here is a quick synopsis of what I did.

I personally added a second drive
mounted it as /home2
moved files from /home to /home2
unmounted 2nd drive and remounted as /home.

Now all my customers domain directories reside on second drive. MySQL and Mail still are on primary.

nice and easy, i like it...but I am looking for an easy way to use 2x120G drives split over about 130 sites, using one solely for system/mail/sql/etc and the other for home is not really an option this time.

I checked that thread, it's a pretty cool way for you to increase your storage.

Anyhow, I think that's the closest you can get for control panel like Ensim or Plesk since they don't natively (I think) support multiple disks.

Another thought would be using a hardware or software raid to combine space from both disks. (Which is kind of a hassle though.. Especially if you're already have lots of customers.)

yeah, I was thinking of using a software raid0, do you know of any utilities that will allow you to change your disks over without having to wipe the contents of both disks? even if its a bit of downtime while it reconfigures the files, its OK.

thanks!

Did some search and this link looks promising :

http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/linux-adv/raid.htm

Caveat :
It seems like you need to wipe both partitions in order to build RAID, which means that you may need 3rd harddrive or some remote server that backs up everything on your active partition.

If you plan carefully and there's no surprise, I'd say you can expect 3-4 hours of downtime max.

Performance-wise, I really have no idea since I've never used software RAID before.

Good luck!

P.S. - Just out of curiosity. Do you have any backup solution for your customers? I currently have an automated script that do incremental database backup to remote site every couple hours. -- I'm looking for a better solution. Maybe something that backs up the entire Plesk configuration.

I'd rather get a real (hardware) RAID solution from EV1

I heard they're getting some new RAID cards, or just got'em recently

if you're interested, send an e-mail to custom.orders@ev1servers.net describing your requirements and they will reply with a quote

Luke : If you, by any chance, are getting RAID solution from EV1, please share your story with us. I really like to hear it.
