Full Version: how long to wait for REGISTRAR-LOCK does not allow for transfer

I'm trying to transfer a domain from dotster. A few hours ago I changed the domain from locked to unlocked at dotster. It now shows as unlocked at dotster's whois. However when I try and transfer it to ev1, I still get the error " is not currently transferable: Domain status REGISTRAR-LOCK does not allow for transfer."

How long to you have to wait and from where does tucows/ev1 get the lock data?

I'd like to leave the domain exposed (unlocked) for as short of a time as necessary.

I've been having registration-related problems since this morning. Earlier it was:

Software error:
Error: could not connect to socket. Please try again later. at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/WebAuth.pm line 137, line 1.

Now I get this:

Transport Error: Unable to connect to the processing hub. Socket OK.

It appears the errors is on EV1's end. I just got an email back from Dotster saying that "The domain name was unlocked immediately:
200 Command completed successfully " But domains.ev1servers.net still throws up the error that the domain is locked so I can't transfer it in.

It's already been 26 hours - you mean a total of 48 hours

My fault - sorry - just realized I didn't say in the first post how long before posting I had unlocked it at dotster. Since it's been over 24 hours now, I went ahead and emailed domains@ev1servers.net so hopefully they'll be able to figure out where the glitch is.

Finally today I was able to put in for the transfer for this domain... learned two interesting things. First, thanks to Brooke:

For domain transfers we must rely on the whois information. Unlocking it at the registry level allows you to make changes with the registrar you currently have, but to transfer it to another registrar the changes have to have been applied to the whois information as well.

And second, the lock status doesn't (or didn't in this case) update as quickly as changing a domain contact. I first unlocked, waited 24 hours, then made a contact change as a test when the domain still showed up as locked in the whois. The contact change showed up in 12 hours, but it took another 12+ for the lock to finally vanish in the whois.
