Full Version: Nameservers and Changing Main Domain

Hi,

I apologize if this is a silly question to ask but prior to changing my domain to point to my new servers' DNS that I setup, I wanted to make sure that it not pointing is the reason stuff isn't working there.

I followed the how-to at http://forum.ev1servers.net/showthread.php...dns+nameservers

My information is the following:

domain bestgarden.net
NS ns1.bestgarden.net
NS2 ns2.bestgarden.net
hostname cpanel.bestgarden.net

I have setup both cpanel.bestgarden.net and bestgarden.net as accounts in WHM. I also setup another one called endaria.com that I pointed to ev1's ns. I would need to repoint that domain to my ns, but when I do an nslookup off ns1.bestgarden.net or ns2.bestgarden.net, I do not get any returns for any of these. Thus, I am worried that I do not in fact have things setup correctly and didn't want to change bestgarden.net itself over to point to the nameservers until I was certain that basically they aren't working because the domain itself isn't pointed there.

Thanks.

Well, after talking to a friend who has their own server setup at their university, it does in fact require pointing the domain here for the nameservers to work. I imagined I would need to do this, but had hoped someone here could confirm it (and didn't know if I would be able to get ahold of my friend to ask questions...). Noting something as simple to me here as, "Yes, you have to do this, you fool," would have sufficed. Thanks for your help.

To test your nameserver before you update the registrar, run

"nslookup "

this will query your DNS server and not your default ones which may not have the correct information.

you may also want to check certain types like NS and MX by doing

"nslookup -type=NS "

Once you are happy with the results you will need to update the registrar's records for every domain that you will host DNS for.

After you do all of that the changes may take up to 48 hours to be visible everywhere.
