Full Version: Plesk. Software upgrades?
The Planet Forums > Control Panels > Plesk

Hi all ...Edgei here, and I just wanna ask is Plesk like Ensim where it is heavily MODIFIED to where you can never upgrade to a new version of certain software? This is a major concern for me, and ultimately will be the breaker when I decide what to get.

I don't know. I'm reading the forums a lot, and the more I read, the more mad.gif I get, because I was swaying towards E, but all the heavy moderations, and not being able to do A and J is giving my brain a workin' over....icon_razz.gif

Let's say I get a plain box, can I install some other kinda panel on it? I should be able to.

Thanks all.

In a word, yes. Plesk puts some components in odd places (apache is in /usr/local/psa/apache, MySQL is in /usr/local/psa/mysql, and so on) and might rely on certain versions to work.

You can always install anything you want outside of Plesk, but if you want to upgrade the key components (apache, mysql, qmail, bind) you run the risk of messing up Plesk.

This is slightly less of an issue if you install the new Plesk 2.5 upgrade, which includes newer versions of a bunch of things.

I have successfully upgraded ProFTPD and PHP to the latest versions on my Plesk server, but if I ever need to upgrade Qmail, MySQL, or Apache I'll probably remove Plesk altogether.

If you get a plain box, yes, you can install whatever you want on it. Webmin is one popular control panel you can install - you won't find it half as friendly as Plesk but it works.

So what about CPanel from www.cpanel.net? Can I use that, or is RS systems custom configured?

Thankiez

I ask because I have used CPane when I hosted(I still have account) with BurstNET for well over a year, and I just Love CPanel.

So all i do is get 2 fresh virgin boxes and start living happily ever after?

Yes you can install that but you have to get the licenses yourself.

Now, I'm wondering when RS is gonna get CPanel. And if they do, will it be heavily "fixed"?...lol Because if they r gonna get it, i can just wait.

Thankiez:p

This is not exactly true.

PSA puts things in differnt places in there .sh install but the RPM install is rather "normal" in where things are located. Additionally, with the PMP install (and the .sh install) you can upgrade packages, just contact Plesk for which items have dependiencies and which do not.

Plesk also has an architecture that will allow customizations to be made and then not overwritten by subsequent upgrades - just let them know what you are tying to do - thier support is excellent and I am sure they will be happy to help.
