I was just wondering I know HS asked us our opinion on implementing a backup solution sometime and know that everyone was very interested. I was wondering if there is anything planned for the future for us. Or even maybe not counting server to server transfers is another solution that I think alot of us would be happy with.. Also hats off to RS and there new systems.. These compaqs really ROCK!!!

Ehh... not counting server to server transfers would be a little difficult. The switch just monitors traffic, it's just a counter, it doesn't care to / from or anything (unfortunatly). I'm not sure if you can even configure it to exclude traffic from certain subnets, maybe you can, but you probably can't.

However, with the amount of bandwidth given per month, I do a weekly backup of my sites, and a nightly backup of my Databases, and that is just a fraction of the 400GB/mo allowed.

The big problem is, with having so many servers now, with no backup solution at all, and also no systems pre-installed with any backup software, it would take a lot of funds and a lot of work to get everything working smooth. Not sure if it would be profitable.

I think you may actually be wrong on this one... Typically anything that's 1 hop won't be counted (which if the servers are in the same place they will be exactly that).

That has been my experience with other dedicated server providers.

One hop would have to be the same switch, but since each row is on their own switch, you would need two servers side by side (if that was the case)...

However, like it been discussed in the past, this is all up to RS if they are going to do this. People have begged, pleaded, griped, and complained. We just have to sit and wait... icon_sad.gif

I've just noticed that the new version of webmin has an extra module called 'Filesystem Backup'. I've been trying it out and it appears to do the job. Needs a bit more work but with a second hard disk at least have some sort of backup system which is better than not having anything.

I think the backup solution is to buy another server..... or in my case ftp your backup.tar.gz to another box every morning.

Since a weekly backup of a 60 gig drive would take 240 gigs a month you're better off just getting a second drive :0
