Full Version: experiences switching from RH to BSD?

I use FreeBSD on the desktop at home, and would like to switch my EV1 server to FreeBSD as well. Does anyone have any info they can share?

- Does EV1 charge money for the service of wiping your disk and installing the new OS?
- How long does it take them to start the process, and then how long are you down for?
- Do you ask them to do it simply by submitting a trouble ticket?
- Any horror stories about what could go wrong?

TIA

They charge if you ask them to do this job. There are ways to do the job yourself. (requires some knowledge)

You dont expect they will do all service/configuration transfer? I think at the very first you should inventory your RH server, what type/kind of services does it run and will you find needed software in FreeBSD ports, how are you going to transfer users, system settings, databases, etc. You will not be able just to copy over binaries/configs/data.

It is all quite simple if you just want to convert RH to clean FreeBSD and start from there.

If the system is already running Linux, you can try the depenguinator.

Warning: dont attempt this if you have no idea what you're doing.
