i would like to move from one dedicated server to the other without affecting my sites and their e-mails.
how may i achieve that! (i have root access on both)

You need some server administration skills to do that.
Basically you need this:

1. setup and secure the target server.

2. backup your data (domains, databases, mail, configurations, etc ...) to have it ready to move. If you use a control panel it should have a backup tool but sometimes it's tricky to make it work properly. You also can prepare data for manual move.

3. import your data in the target server. Once you have all imported you need to check the data to see if its ok and adjust any script if necessary.

4. Now you have your data on both servers so you just need to update DNS. There will be no downtime.

5. once dns are updated, you can move stall info that might have been left on old server during dns update (emails, database entries, etc ...). There are ways to syncronize emails from old to new server (using fetchmail) and also to remote update databases on new server , so once moving no data is lost.

thx for the steps,
one thing, don't u think that editing the Zone files for every domain (on the old server) so that it points to the IP addresses of the new server would solve the problem!

thx

That's obvious icon_smile.gif but only possible if you are using your own nameservers ... icon_biggrin.gif hehe .. can be a pain if you have hundreds of domains to edit every record.

You'll need then to config same nameservers on new server if you plan to drop the old server.

umm..well,all the sites (about 15 ) use the same name servers.
and it's fine by me to change them one by one icon_smile.gif
but..as for the new server,i think all i want is to configure it with the same name servers and that'll be all right !

would appreciate help on this

thx
