Well maybe this question might sound stupid for some of you, but I'm a newbie when it comes to server administration and linux, I read all over this forum that one of the first thing you should do to your server is change the hostname, and this is o.k. with me but I will like to know the reason I should do this, security? Please could someone explain to me this, thanks.
P.D. Nighthawk if you read this post could you tell me if your script will run in a server running Plesk reloaded version 7.1.5, thanks.

because the default hostname that comes with ev1 instalation dosent work. Is a fake one. If i remember right is something like plaincpanel.ev1.net (not sure), and that address is invalid. Being this address invalid you are going to have all kind of problems, starting with email and httpd.

Thanks for you reply my friend but if this is so, why I'm not having any problem with my webmail or pop and no problem also with httpd since I have not change my host yet. I looked at my /var/qmail/control/me to check the server name and this was on it:
plesk7.ev1servers.net
So I guess I don't have the correct hostname but I didn't notice yet any problem what so ever with this setting. And please don't get me wrong I now this have to be change but I will like to learn and get the whole picture about this issue, thanks.

well.. all the notifications to the server to you and your clients will be . plesk7.ev1servers.net
i think that is bad for you..

Also banners for some services such as smtp will have the wrong name. Things may not be broken, but there will be problems (maybe not critical service stopping problems). I can't think of a single good reason to not change the hostname. Also, if you get multiple servers in the future and never change any of them, you will never know which one is which when you get reports since, as theuruguayan said, all notifications will be from the default hostname.

Some mail servers will not accept mail from you if your reverse dns does not match the hostname. You need your server to have a reverse dns set to yourhostname.domain.com to resolve back to your ip address.
Besides, it's just the "right" way to do it..
